What does "hardwired" mean?
Asked by: Carol
Hello Carol, Hardwired alarms rely on AC power as its primary power source. The home would have locations prepared for their installation. The alternate would be alarms that operate solely on battery power. Thank you.

I presently have 6 single sensoe smoke detectors that are hard wired together to form a warning system. They are 13 years old and need to be replaced

Do I need to have dual sensors for an all electric home such as the PI2010.

FireX Hardwired 120-Volt Inter-Connectable Dual Sensor Photoelectric and Ionization Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 87.

There was a competing BRK 3120B dual sensor smoke alarm that was $10 cheaper than this, but this one was direct plugin to my existing wiring harness, and seems to be a better design than 3120B(which has "360" wide open grills that will collect dust and require regular cleaning). Also this is a UL listed product, while 3120B is not. The missing front-load battery door will be a nuisance, but hopefully the battery won't need to be replaced in 5-6 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Whole house smoke detectors I cannot tell you how these behave when needed: I hope I never find out. But replacement of smoke detectors every ten years is recommended, and the ones we had were so old the manufacturer's website no longer included that model number as a "legacy". Consumer Reports recommended this model to meet our needs. Installation was easy. The pilot lights give us confidence they are armed and ready.

The new units have a plug attached to the wires, not bare wires as shown in the picture. This plug attaches directly to the old Kidde plug in the ceiling. I replaced the old yellowed ceiling ring with the new white one using just a screw driver. Could not be easier.

I bought 4 of these in 2014 and had too replace one in 2015 one in 2016 and 2 just last week. All defective waking us up at all hours of the night. These are suppose to last 10 years. I can't get a response from the Kidde. Bad product and bad customer service.
