does this smoke alarm have to be connected to electricity to work?
Asked by: kat
Hello Kat, if you never plan to hardwire the alarm we would recommended installing an alarm designed to run on battery only instead. Thank you.

The green light is on, but a red light flashes ocassionally. Is this normal?

Asked by: Bob
Ignore my previous answer. My old one didn't flash red, but this one does-every 40 seconds, according to the manual. As long as there is no alarm it's just working normally.

Alarm goes off randomly in the middle of the night. Beeping and voice "fire" alarm

Alarm goes off in the middle of the night. Sometimes just once. Sometimes it onto a second time after about five minutes. Then quiet.
Asked by: Cindy
Hello Cindy. Are all of the alarms going off together or is just one going off by itself? If it is multiple alarms then after they go off, look for the alarm that has a longer red light for 1.5 seconds every 15 seconds to a minute. Vacuum out that alarm out around the back side edges of the alarm very, very thoroughly with the crevice attachment of a vacuum cleaner or blow it out with compressed air like a can of keyboard cleaner. If the alarm goes off again, unplug the alarm and take it down and call us at Kidde Product Support at 1-800-880-6788 with the alarm and battery in hand.

If you're replacing old ones they will not match even though it looks the exact same. You will need to replaced the wiring connector and the ceiling mount. Why the heck they did this baffles me, I'm getting a different brand just because of this. They do sell a connector separately though that will help but they should give it to you since it was their dumb decision to change it up.

It sure would be nice if they could keep a standard connection and base plate so you don’t have to change the entire alarm, baseplate and rewire a new pig tail each time you change them out. The one that was 16 feet on the ceiling wasn’t much fun having to rewire and remount a new baseplate.

The screw holes were in the same position so it was a very easy changeout. Then just undo the wirenut connections on the old and redo them on the new, twist the new one onto the newly installed base plate, and it was off and running. Easy, peasy.

When turned on again, I push button checked each one, and all worked as listed. I’m good for 5 years and confident they will go off when needed.

I got this one to replace one of the same manufacturer in a house that is fifteen years old, thinking it would be easier to just plug and play, as it were. Not true. The mounting base and electrical connector are different. This wasn't a problem as I am an electrician by trade, so I could wire it hot. For someone who isn't used to working with electricity, swapping this bad boy out would require locating the circuit breaker and turning it off. Other than that, there doesn't seem to be any glaring negatives. :-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy connection This Firex product is very simple to install. It includes a wiring harness with interconnect and a mounting plate. In my case I was replacing a malfunctioning unit that failed after two years. It stopped detecting the battery even though battery had full voltage. At least it was designed to detect such a failure and beep to notify me of a problem. The product has a good warranty but one has to pay shipping both ways. The low cost of the product does not justify the shipping for rma under warranty. I have eight of these in my house. First set lasted just about five years before one failed so I replaced all of them. Second set had one premature failure at 2 years but the other ones are working fine. Overall I like the simple install, easy replacement and low cost.

I needed to replace my previously purchased older model Firex Smoke Detector with the newer model. The old model had a different adapter for the wiring so hard wires needed to be cut from the adapter to accommodate the newer model with a different adapter. I needed to replace six detectors so the time spent was a bit more than anticipated, Other than that, everything went well.

The plug-in receptacle did not match the original wiring, so it was necessary to shut off the electricity to replace the feed wiring to the alarm plug (wiring and plug supplied). I do like the battery back-up which my original alarm did not have. I look forward to another 25 years of satisfaction with the new unit.
