Can I use this detector but battery operation only

Asked by: TEE
Hello TEE. It is not DESIGNED to be battery only and we recommend hardwiring it. We have had customers tell us they have run the alarm on battery alone for as long as 6 months before changing the battery but we have never tested it ourselves and can't comment on the accuracy of that. It will not be able to communicate to any other alarm while on battery alone and without wiring. This unit will protect that one area from heat above 135 degrees while running on battery as long as the battery lasts. We are Kidde Product Support at 1-800-880-6788

What is the specified operating temperature? I need it for an attic where it gets very cold and very hot.
Asked by: Shawn
Hello Shawn. We recommend avoiding using this alarm in locations where the temperature may fall below -20ºF or rise above 100ºF. For many places in the country where attics get too warm for a 135 degree heat detector, we would recommend purchasing a 200 degree switch-type spot-type combination heat detector and rate-of-rise detector, which is a mechanical switch that closes if the heat rises too quickly or gets too high, and then connecting that detector to an interconnected system of Kidde hardwired alarms with the SM120X relay module, which can be special ordered at the Pro Desk at any Home Depot. We are Kidde Product Support at 1-800-880-6788. Thank you for your interest.

Can this be used (in an older home garage) on a "stand-alone" basis - - -Hardwired to 120 VAC power, but NOT inter-connected with other devices?
Asked by: GEIBO
Hello Geibo. Yes. It can be used as a single station alarm, hooked up only to hot and neutral. Leave the red interconnect wire capped off.
