Hello. In reference to your question, this alarm is time weighted. The way a time weighted alarm works is it measures the build up in a house. It is not an instantaneous alarm. For you to feel the beginning effects of C/O poisoning you would have to be exposed to level of 50 PPMS for 8 hours. At a level of 50 PPMS the alarm would have to be at 50 for 3 1/2 hours before the alarm would sound. At a level of 400 PPMS the alarm will come on in approx. 4 to 10 mins. So the higher the reading the quicker the response is on the alarm. It takes a few minutes for the alarm to get a good reading. The lowest amount of carbon monoxide that will set off this alarm is 36 parts per million after 50 hours. At 36 Parts Per Million, the alarm will go off after about 50 Hours. At 40 Parts Per Million, it will go off after about 10 Hours. At 70 Parts Per Million, it will go off after about 1-4 Hours. At 150 Parts Per Million, it will go off after about 10-50 Minutes. At 400 Parts Per Million or higher, it will go off within 4-15 Minutes. If you have further questions, you can call us at 1-800-880-6788. Thank you for your interest. Read Less

I respond to literally hundreds of calls each year for "Carbon Monoxide Alarm Sounding". In a very small percentage of these calls we find CO, verified by very accurate monitors that we carry. The remainder of the calls are caused by, in order of frequency, dead batteries, expired detectors, or malfuncioning detectors. Please don't misunderstand me; CO is deadly and every time your CO detector goes off it should be taken as a true finding. Get out of the home and call 911. With that said, replace your batteries twice a year, replace your detector when the manufacturer says, and buy this detector. I can't remember the last time I found a Nighthawk that was wrong about CO. It's what I have in my house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from lasted 6 houses and 11 years later :) Bought and installed my Nighthawk December 2005 and it just today showed display of ERR indicating the sensor was worn out and done - so it lasted 11 YEARS and we've moved 6 times! What a durable wonderful detector to see the level of 0 all these years knowing our air was safe - we really got our money's worth and am going to purchase another one tonight!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT CARBON MONOXIDE ALARM! This is the only Carbon Monoxide Alarm I will use. Once someone from XCEL told me to NOT use a duo alarm such as a Carbon/Smoke Alarm. The ones that are ONLY ONE alarm are those that seem to work the best. You do not carry it in the store, which is a bit hard to believe, but as I ordered two for my daughter's new town home, I did get free shipping.

Display is easy to see and read which gives confidence that it is working.

Easy plug-in installation option, so couldn't have been easier to install one in each bedroom. Presuming it will get the same utility and trouble-free life as our old Nighthawk did.
