Customer Questions & Answers

How many would you need for a 2300 sqft house, 2 stories

Asked by: Heather
Hello Heather. CO alarms should be mounted in or near bedrooms and living areas. It is recommended that you install a Kidde CO alarm on each level of your home. When choosing your installation locations, make sure you can hear the alarm from all sleeping areas. If you install only one CO alarm in your home, install it near bedrooms, not in the basement or furnace room. When wall mounting, place out of reach of children. Under no circumstances should children be allowed to handle the CO alarm. • Placing the alarm at eye level allows for optimum monitoring of the digital display.

Does a Kidde plug in unit without battery back up go bad?

i do not have the manual
Asked by: Denise
In reference to your question, our carbon monoxide alarms made before January 2, 2013 have a lifespan of 7 years from first use. All CO alarms have an "End of life" notification and our alarms from before January 2013 will chirp every 30 seconds or display ERR and chirp every 30 seconds. Kidde carbon monoxide alarms made on or after January 2nd 2013 will have a lifespan of 10 years and will come up with END to mark the end of life. Many of our older alarms only had a 5 year warranty even though they had a 7 year lifespan. However, if you feel your alarm is not performing properly before the end of it's life, please call us with the alarm in hand near an outlet at 1-800-880-6788 and we will be happy to troubleshoot it with you and answer any questions. Thank you for your interest.

Customer Reviews

Plug-In Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Battery Backup is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 58.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would purchase this product again! We purchased this product 7 years ago and when it reached the end of its life, it let us know with an intermittent beeping. With all of the items we need to take care of every day, it is nice to come across an item that takes care of itself! Easy installation and you never know it's there. Be careful when reading the other reviews, operator error seems to be the problem with some of the bad reviews...for instance, the instructions say not to place the item in a kitchen setting as it can remit an alarm due to what's happening in the kitchen! We will buy this product again and again!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I found this product OK with one exception This was the high end of the price for a CO monitor, and it has all the qualities you expect in a good product. There is one detail that the manufacturer needs to improve. The only way to silence the alarm is to remove it from the wall receptacle, find the tiny little off switch on the back, and turn it OFF. This is inconvenient if all you want to do is plug it into another receptacle. It is dangerous if you forget to switch it back to ON. I hope the manufacturer gets word of this and makes the needed improvements.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Can you trust it? I purchased two of these detectors, and have had at least one fail. I say "at least", because it is nearly impossible for the typical homeowner to verify whether one of these is functioning properly. After 3 months of use, one of them suddenly went off downstairs, while the upstairs unit remained quiet. Swapped them, and the unit now upstairs went off again. Took the suspect unit out in an open garage and plugged it in, and within a few minutes it went off yet again. So, either it was detecting false readings, or the other silent unit was not working. Since the noisy unit was outside and still went off, decided that one was defective. Called Kidde and they are sending me a replacement unit free of charge. Nice support, but now I have some doubts as to how trustworthy these units are. Read the instructions thoroughly before plugging them in. They can be configured to sound an alarm if they are removed from a wall socket, and the alarm is ear piercing. Fumbling with the unit for 30 seconds as you struggle to deactivate the unplug alarm can be quite painful.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor choice It worked for about three weeks then it started beeping intermittently, like when the battery is dead. I tried 2 other new batteries and it wouldn't quit the beeping. Returned it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lousy Product I bought this, got it home to replace the one i'd have for 5 years and the instructions said it would start beeping in three years because it would wear out within that time. I plugged it in and tried the test button - nothing. So I left it plugged in overnight thinking it needed to "set itself" - next day I tried it again - nothing. So I unplugged it and put it on the counter to return it thinking it was defective. My wife went to move it and it went off and would not turn off until she smashed it! Don't know if HD will take it back, but I don't care - I'll get a First Alert.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Would not reccomend Bought this about 1 year ago. One day it went off like there was carbon monoxide. My others (different brand) did not go off. I checked the Kidde model and took it out to fresh air and removed battery. Still was going off for a few minutes. I let it sit in the garage for over 6 months, Today I put in a brand new battery. It did the same thing as before. It will not shut off. Can not return it because I don't have the recipe. Im out 30 bucks. I would not recommend buying this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This product is a simple plug in and it's ready to go I have a wood stove and have one of these on both floors of my house. They are placed in the hallway of each floor and blend in with the wall (similar color). I trust they work and occasionally will hit the test button to make sure they are still functioning.
