Customer Questions & Answers

What happens after the ten year battery wears out? Do you throw the whole unit away and purchase another one?

Asked by: AngieAAB
yes, Angie, and only use UL / NFPA recommended ones. most retail outlets only sell them. also don't compromise price for quality ( its not worth the safety risk)

Where do you mount these alarms?

On the ceiling? Wall? Do they need to be up high in the room? Do you need an electrical source for them?
Asked by: Wade6
Look on the web site for (or call) Your Local Fire Department. They should have a list of approved locations, quantity and other information regarding the placement and locations of fire alarms (and how many combination smoke & CO alarms) are required in your home.

Is it wired into the house? Does it meet or exceed all building codes?
Asked by: Doug
10 years is pretty much the limit on the technology. ( much like a car or smart phone) they should be replaced at least after 10 yrs, or malfunction.) it is NOT recommended that you replace the power source at the end of that period, but replace the unit. most of us recommend that when you replace the device, place a date on the inside, so you, ( or if you move) the next occupant, knows when they were installed.

Does the product list anywhere the year it will expire, or do you need to make note of this itself and/or just wait for the day it chirps on you?
Asked by: Dodo
You need to make your own note of expiration on the unit or package.

One of them kept going off at random times for no reason at all, waking up the whole house or having my poor pets in a panic when it went off during the day and no one was home. I finally had to kill it completely when one night neither the hush button nor fanning it worked to silence it. Now the second unit started to act up as well! These alarms are total junk!!! I still have some of the older styles of smoke alarms, that use a regular 9V battery, installed and they are always quiet unless I burn toast or the battery needs changing.

Meets new local fire code requirements in my town for selling house. Hope they are never needed! Used these to replace 12-year-old wired smoke detectors. Technology has improved greatly. Siren and voice can be heard throughout 4,000 sq ft house, so very happy with these as was the fire inspector.

I love the idea of not swapping (2) AA batteries twice a year (40 AA batteries over the ten year life of each detector) . I also liked the mounting options, but the single sheetrock anchor screw is very brittle. I broke it using a hand screwdriver - even when I drilled the 3/16" hole.

Seemed great -- easy install, no replacing batteries when they run out in the middle of the night. Right? WRONG. After a year one of them started going off for no reason. Did I mention this was in an infant's room? That was fun. The next one to go was in my toddler's room. We had to disable the whole thing at 1AM this morning. We will never buy this brand again. I'm happy going back to changing batteries. Seriously, these are not worth the trouble and they WILL go off for no reason in the middle of the night.

Last night it went off in the middle of the night and could not be silenced. This model is disposable, meaning the battery cannot be changed. In other words, the battery cannot be accessed, because the unit cannot be disassembled. On the underside of the unit, there is a layer of card stock, which must be penetrated with a screwdriver to disable the battery. Once the battery is disabled, the unit must be disposed. Horrible design, especially considering how often it gives a false alarm.

Just installed these yesterday; good instructions but the tiny screws provided are easy to strip if you're going into any kind of wood other than pine, so if there's a chance you'll have to reinstall to meet code (like I did) maybe plan accordingly. Check your fire codes first, kids! Sadly there was no sheetrock or drywall in the house so I couldn't use the easy one-and-done option but it sure looked good. Obviously I have no idea how well these will perform, but I hope they're excellent for the sake of the people buying our house. :)
