Answer:
Hello John. No, this alarm can not be used without the screws. To be properly mounted, the bracket has to be attached to the ceiling or to the wall within a foot of the ceiling and then the alarm has to go into the bracket to turn on the alarm and activate it. If we can help you further, we are Kidde Product Support at 1-800-880-6788. Thank you for your interest.

Will I have to replace the bases which are currently attached to my ceilings or can I just screw the new detectors into the existing/in place bases?

The new base is very different, I think a better design. It can be easy installed in the same spot.

Answer:
Hello. In reference to your question, Dan is correct. This comes with a small circular mounting bracket that has a single center screwhole. This makes the bracket easy to install but the alarm will not work with your previous bracket. If you have any further questions about this, you can call us at 1-800-880-6788. Thank you for your interest.

Answer:
That would be nice! But, no the new unit comes with a small circular mounting bracket that also activate the unit when installed correctly. The new bracket has a single center hole screw mount, making the alignment easy to cover original spot. there are three outer ring screws to prevent the spinning effect. I used the center and one outer screw in my installations.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Do not buy! I bought two. I had one installed in the garage and the other one in the kitchen. A month later, at 3A.M, the one in the garage started with the awful noise. I got the ladder and, afraid, climbed on it and unscrewed the Kidde; it kept making noise and I took it to my bedroom to try to continue my sleep but the noise continued. I called Kidde and I was told a thunder may have triggered it. A month later the one in the kitchen started with the noise. Again, I had to climb the ladder, and unscrew it. This time Kidde blamed it on humidity. I asked for a refund-they do not give refunds. I called Home Depot and told them what I went through and the manager or Assistant Manager told me to take both to the store and gave me his name. I did and I got the refund. August 25, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Junk! I bought three of these when I bought my house in Nov 2014. The one in the basement had a false alarm a couple times. A few days ago the one in the hallway right outside my master bedroom activated at 3:00 AM! Scared the living daylights out of my cat and I! After searching the entire house doing a lap around the outside of the house determined it was another false alarm! I'm done with these and going to the 2nd generation Nest which seems to have all its bugs worked out. For areas of the house where Nest is not cost justifiable I am going with the old school First Alerts with replaceable batteries. According to many reviews I've read the 10 year sealed ones report more false alarms then the old style ones along with the 2nd gen Nest. August 16, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by The other reviews are right I installed my unit in March, it is now August, and it goes off randomly with no ability to quiet it. The center button didn't do it, so it's permanently disabled. Wasted money on what was pressed as a reliable piece of safety equipment. I'll be reaching out to my local fire department for other suggested brands. August 24, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worst purchase ever I had just finished taking a shower when the alarm went off. It was a false alarm as there was no fire anywhere in my home to be found. I had to get on a chair and reach to the ceiling to try to turn it off but the "Push to Hush" button (stupid name for a button) was not shutting it off. The alarm is super loud; I would guess 120+ dB SPL. It kept beeping for a couple of minutes so I took it down from the ceiling and placed it under a sofa cushion. I didn't have time for this as I had to get ready to go to work. Tonight I returned home and sat on my sofa. I felt something hard underneath me and I head a beep. I had forgot all about the alarm! I took it out and exposed it to the air thinking it was fixed. I was about to put it back in its place on the ceiling when the alarm started going off again. Again, it was a false alarm as clearly my house was still intact and fire-free. I struggled at least 10 minutes with it trying to turn it off. I had to open up the unit while the entire time the beeps did not stop. I am an electrical engineer and luckily I knew what to look for. I located the switch on the circuit board and finally turned off the alarm. I just realized that you could do the same thing by taking a screwdriver to it on the backside (under the sticker). I hope I did not incur permanent hearing damage. P.S. The unit has only been in use for a few months; under one year for sure. August 26, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worst Smoke Alarm Failed after 1.5 years. Do not buy this model. The other Kidde 10 year models work better than this one. July 12, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by 10 YEARS, NO WAY, WORST ALARM EVER I have five of these installed, manufactured in Dec 2014, installed in May 2015. Today is June 8, 2016, and I had to deal with a 14 ft extension ladder to get the DARN thing down when the battery failed. Don't waste your money on this. I'm a 67 year old woman living alone. This was not fun nor a good investment. June 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by good product Needed alarm that did not interconnect for sunroom addition - appreciate the lithium battery feature with a 13' ceiling as we won't need to climb up every 6 months to change the battery. December 8, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Save your money Bought this for a new addition (laundry/pantry). After 1 year it started singing for no apparent reason. Called Kidde and they sent a replacement and indicated that I would need to return the defective alarm, but never sent a mailer for it. After 15 months the replacement started to sing again with no apparent reason. Now I have another smoke alarm to properly dispose of. June 11, 2016
