Rated 5 out of 5Â by mophead Install it, forget it!
With a 10-year battery, I shouldn't have to grab my ladder to check or change the batteries on a regular basis. Despite the oddly designed instruction sheet, the smoke detector is easy to install. Just screw the mounting plate to the ceiling or wall, then twist the smoke detector onto the mounting plate. That action will turn the unit on. After about 10 seconds, the unit will give out two beeps, twice. There is a test button in the middle that you can press from time to time to ensure functionality. I'll give it five stars for now; we'll see if it really lasts 10 years.

Rated 1 out of 5Â by Mark Battery Failed after 5 months!
Beware that many people rating this as 5 star due to the ten year battery most likely just purchased the alarm and haven't had it long enough to fail. My unit was fine for five months and then started with the end of life chirping. I see many other reviews with the same issue. Nothing will stop the chirping except turning the screw slot on the back which permanently disables the unit. I figured after 5 month that HD would not take it back, so I sent it back to Kidde for repair or replacement and am now without a detector in that one room. I'm going back to 9V battery models after this.

Rated 1 out of 5Â by Wallingford Do not buy
I have had this product for about 3 weeks. Installation was easy, but last night at 1 am and 3 am it went off for no reason. All of the windows in my small house were open and there was plenty of air circulation from ceiling fans. There was no fire. After the second false alarm I switched it off by turning the hidden screw on the back. Now it is useless because the notice says "Turning off alarm is permanent".
I will try to return it to Home Depot but I have disposed of the receipt, so I'm probably out of luck.

Rated 1 out of 5Â by Sparty2629 Need to return.
It would not be fair for me to rate this item, as I have not used it. When I set it up, initially, the three beeps sounded, indicating operation, but then it proceeded to go off, as if it were sensing a fire. I tried to find the way to turn it off, but there is no way. I had to disable it and once this is done, your smoke detector is disabled for good. My cat was attacking the dog, as well as my leg, apparently in a panic from the sound. Now I have no smoke detector and am afraid to activate the new one, so I will return them both. :(
