Answer:
Deb,
From an electric and hook up perspective, as long as you have the space and meet the electrical requirements, then yes. Front the perspective of your drains, sewer or septic tank, you would want to consult with someone locally, possible a plumber. But, there isn't any reason why a home built in 1979 couldn't handle this type of garbage disposer. Thank you for viewing this KitchenAid home appliance.

Answer:
Hi LnNv,
You may use this disposal with a septic system, however it will contribute to the buildup of solids in the system faster than normal and the system will have to be pumped out more often.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Replacement easy I had to replace our 10 year old Kitchen disposal and was glad that the new model was exactly the same as the old in being able to connect up the drain pipe and dishwasher connection. It made the job easy May 28, 2016

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by bad experience with this item Bought this product online and within 3 days it stop working (jammed). No hard food was disposed. I pulled it back down and there was no sign of item causing it to jam.Returned it rightaway. January 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Don't forget to remove the plug! We had an Insinkerator brand disposal that we replaced with this Kitchenaid model. From day one the Insinkerator was loud and water drained slowly from the sink even when the disposal wasn't being used. Did some research online and saw that this one received good ratings, so went to Home Depot to purchase it. Unfortunately Home depot only carried the Insinkerator brand in the store, so I went to Lowes only to find the same situation. Went home and ordered the Kitchenaid disposal online which we received in about 5 days. After installing the disposal, water no longer drained from our dishwasher. My husband is a handyman type and didn't bother to read the instructions. When he did, he saw that there is a plug in the line in case you don't have a dishwasher that must be removed first if you do have a dishwasher. Once he removed the plug all was well. I LOVE this disposal! It is so much better than the Insinkerator, it is much quieter, takes care of food scraps easily and water drains quickly. It cost a little more, but you get what you pay for. I don't know what the energy efficiency is for the Kitchenaid disposal which is why I gave it 3 stars for that category. A word of advice for Home Depot. Please carry more than one brand of garbage disposal in your store! Since your rival Lowes does the same it would give you a competitive edge! December 8, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Easy Install This disposal seems to be more robust than other 1/2 hp units I looked at. Install was easy. I would have liked the power cord to be pre installed. Kitchenaid should offer it to areas where the code allows it. December 6, 2015
