What is the black cooktop material? Glass or something else? Is it easy to clean?

Asked by: kkjs
The black shows every spec of food and grease. But it cleans just as well as any other cooktop.

After owning this range now for several months I'd like to share my experiences and the pros and the cons. Let's start with the nice things. It looks really good, like a million dollars! I enjoy the large cooking surface and the 5 burners. The large burners provide enough heat for a good sear and the smaller ones are nice for simmering and smaller pots. The convection oven is nice to keep an even heat around the cooking goods and while baking. I love the proofing option which comes in handy when I'm baking bread. For bread making the steam bake option is also very nice. All in all this oven has some nice features. Now to the not so nice things. Let's start with the large burners. They are powerful but due to the large circumference they create a "ring of fire" while leaving the center of the pot or skillet colder. Now this is an expensive appliance. I don't expect the same performance as I would from a professional range or the likes but why can't they put center fire on the large burners? Is that too much to ask for. It's just a few additional holes! The other annoying thing about the burners is how the knobs adjust the flow of gas. I don't know who designed these valves but when you start turning them down from high to medium at first almost nothing happens, then it turns down very quick and the end of the adjustment range is basically worthless. Without looking under the pot you basically have no idea where you at with the heat. Next the temperature of the oven. I've done several tests with several different thermometers and the oven temperature is always lower than indicated on the control panel. At 500 deg Fahrenheit and after heating up for 30 mins the thermometer still shows only 450 F [see picture]. I used to have a cheap range that was more accurate and in addition it went up to 550 F. Since I like to make pizza on a pizza stone the high temp is needed but I can't get there. It's quite dissatisfying. Next the close to worthless steam self cleaning option where one has to pour water on the bottom for cleaning. I did that and the result was that I had to grab a scrubber and some foam cleaning spray to get the job done. Again, the cheap range had pyro cleaning which was simple and worked like a charm. The storage drawer at the bottom is probably the flimsiest thing I've ever seen. I wobbles and jiggles when you pull it out. Sometimes it's hard to push it back in because it jams. Not up to par with its price tag. Lastly a serious concern about the outside temperature of the oven. When I bake a pizza at 500 F the outside gets so hot that I can't touch it anymore. I measured, using a digital infrared thermometer, temps up to 165 F at the oven door and the control panel. I don't know who designed this range but this is a severe design flaw. During pyro cleaning at 650 F my old range stayed cooler on the outside. This is a serious safety concern because my 6 year old granddaughter is not used to oven doors that she can't touch. Hope she never gets hurt ...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from toxic chemical fumes This oven will not stop giving off chemical fumes. I've been running it empty for an hour each day, with all my doors and windows open for a full week now, hoping that it will stop off-gassing, but the chemical smells are not getting better. The user guide says: "The health of some birds is extremely sensitive to the fumes given off by the oven. Exposure to the fumes may result in death to certain birds. Always move birds to another closed and well-ventilated room." That bird warning sounds like what KitchenAid is using to make the oven self-cleaning may be polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). It's questionable whether humans should breathe PTFE, which is why a lot of cookware manufacturers take pains to note when their nonstick products are PTFE free. Unfortunately, seems like this oven is not PTFE free. Really regret this purchase.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Trim scratches easily/Burners can't be lit when power is out My reasons for purchased a dual fuel include having gas burners so I can use them when the power goes out. We asked before we purchased the oven and were told that yes, the burners could be manually lit when the power goes out. Even the instructions for operating the oven say that the burners can be manually lit. However this is a complete and total lie. There is some sort of a lock that prevents the gas from flowing to the burners when there is no power. Another complaint is that the top of the unit is easily scratched by the grates. Plus the "painted on which burner is which" information on the same panel that is easily scratched have disappeared after 2 years. I am disappointed in this unit.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Defective materials ruined cooktop & warranty doesn't cover I purchased all Kitchenaid products for my kitchen remodel, due to beautiful design, warranty, and quality brand. However, my beautiful new cooktop bubbled around the burners in multiple places after only 1-2 months of light use. I was very disappointed that the one year warranty does not cover DEFECTIVE MATERIALS unless they are reported within 30 days of purchase. So, I have a beautiful new oven with a peeling cooktop that will most likely need to be replaced within a year. I will NEVER purchase a Kitchenaid product again--there are many other brand options that still use quality materials that will last much longer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Control Panel is a Lemon Soon after purchasing this stove the numbers 1, 4 and 7 on the control panel for setting the temperature of the oven failed. Since we bought it soon after it this model was released, we were told parts weren't yet available so we lived with it for a year by turning the breaker off and back on and sometimes the numbers would work, sometimes they wouldn't. Finally we got an error code that the cooling fan wasn't working and service needed to be called. The technician replaced the control panel (it was dented and he ordered a new one, causing me to take time off work for the third time) and cooling fan, showed me that the oven warmed up and numbers on the control panel worked. The very next day we are getting the same error code and the oven won't turn on. I love the look of my appliances but I want them to work. I drive a foreign-made car for the same reason I won't ever buy an American-made appliance again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from horrible to clean This oven has an aqualift cleaning system INSTEAD of self cleaning which I did not realize until I tried to clean it. It does NOT work. I called customer service and was told I have to get on my hands and knees and use a rubber scrapper to get off stuck on dirt in order for aqualift to work. I am over 70 years old and can only get on my hands and knees with great difficulty, but since I am slightly obsessive about a clean oven I tried it but I couldn't get it clean and I am a very neat cook who hardly uses her oven so I think it is horrible and does not work. If I knew I would NOT have bought this model. I move a lot and have always bought Kitchen aid ovens before but never again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Love this oven The oven is great: responsive, heats quickly, and heat is evenly distributed. Everything cooks evenly. The stove top is less satisfactory. The power burner is not great except that it has a simmer feature. None of the other burners have that. Center tiny burner is just a waste of space. Also stovetop is not easy to clean. I have cooked on a Viking and a Wolf and owned a DCS for many years. Perhaps it is unfair to compare the KitchenAid. But then I have also cooked on electric induction burners and found them more effective. Very disappointing. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hot Number Honey! Part of our kitchen renovation-Love this stove! Really works great-love having 5 burners-you have to be careful with the high BTU burner though! The large grates that are on top of the stove are cool too-it can be used for task area and also it fits my cast iron grill really good! So nice to be able to have a large oven that my large cookie sheets can fit in! I do wish they had on the control area an indicator that the stove is on like the indicator that the oven has- This Stove makes me want to cook too much! Trolling recipe sites!
