does the vent have to be hooked up on this microwave?

Asked by: mec
Good question not answered fully. Installation manual has standard instructions for rotating the blower housing for wall or roof venting. Does this mean the instructions are wrong?

We have had this convection microwave for almost a week, and I have used it every day. We are in the midst of renovating and our Kitchenaid induction range is backordered for another few weeks, so this is our only cooking appliance. I have used the convection functoin to make an amazing meatloaf, shrimp and peppers, and a pasta casserole. I used the steamer setting to make crisp green beans, and simmer to cook rice and pasta. The rice was similar in texture and taste to what I make with a rice-cooker. I was worried that it would be tough not having a stove for weeks, but I'm finding more creative ways to use this oven and have not been disappointed yet. Do read the instructions and settings manual if you want to use the sensor and convection features. If all you want is a basic microwave, get the less expensive model. But this appliance is well worth the money!

So far everything we've tried has exceeded our prior one. We haven't tried the convection setting......haven't needed to. It is so quiet compared to the one it replaced. The delivery and installation were right on time and the crew was very neat and professional. Wish we had purchased this Microwave before instead of the other one. One of our pet peeves was that microwave popcorn used to take over 4 minutes in the previous oven and now we can use the popcorn setting and since it uses a sensor, the results are great.

When turn on convection oven get loud popping noise about every thirty seconds until reach cooking temperature, returns when oven cools down. Very annoying, never had a convection oven make noise. When talked with people in Home Depot they said needed to be changed out. Manager spoke with Kitchenaid and was told this is normal metal expansion and contraction. Guess they don't have quality control. Appliance repairman stated he'd never seen either, but Kitchenaid normal.

Don't let the appearance fool you, this microwave is not nearly as large as it appears. From the outside, you see a door that is the full width of the microwave. But when you open it, it is like opening a Christmas present and finding a sweater. They put a lot of work into making this look like a >2 cu. ft unit, but the actual cavity is only a fraction of the size of the door. The noise that this thing makes is the most aggravating aspect of the appliance. The fan is rated at 400 cfm, and if you have never had an over-the-range microwave that moves this much air, you might think that this is normal. It is not. This unit does not have to be this loud, but they went cheap on the design and stuck the consumer with a poor product. The fan has 6 speeds: Loud, loud, loud, loud, loud and off. I measured it at 75dBA. This is the equivalent of a noisy garbage disposal. I don't want this sound level in my face while I am cooking. The best part is the "auto fan" feature. According to the manufacturer, this is done to "protect the microwave from high temperatures". This is a code phrase for "We went cheap on the design to save money, and now the microwave can't handle the temperatures that it operates in. So, we're going to force this obnoxiously loud fan to stay on while you're trying to sit down and have a quiet dinner." Once it triggers, there is no way to turn it off. You also get no indication that the temp has fallen to save levels for this subpar design, so you get to keep checking it until the fan controls start to operate again and you can turn the leaf blower that is running in your kitchen off. If you love shouting over a microwave fan while trying to have a dinner table conversation with your family, this microwave is for you. The "sensor" cook feature appear to be a result of an engineer that has no idea how an appliance is actually used, designing a user interface. The selections required to use this feature are awkward enough, you'll end up skipping this feature and just winging it with a timed cook. The controls didn't have to be laid out this way - this could have been designed to be an intuitive and easy to use feature - but little thought was given to the customer on this one. There are several additional instances of where the user interface could have been user friendly, but through incompetence or lack of caring, they chose not to do so. For the money you're spending on this, you should have a large, robustly designed, user friendly appliance. Instead, you get an overpriced example of how cheaply a microwave can be designed while still being shined up to look expensive. Save you're money, buy a different brand, or at least a different model.

It worked for three months and now will not start. Every time you push start it tells you to shut the door. I called Kitchen Aid (Whirlpool), and now they say it will take two weeks before someone can look at it. Expensive microwave, looks nice in the Kitchen but that is all. As for reliability, you would think for the price it would at least work!

Much larger and have more bells and whistles but I find the exterior to be of inferior quality, the stainless material is not as sleek as the older one. Certain angles shows "wavy-like" unevenness. It is quieter but have not tested it's features and time will tell if this one holds up.

It is really well made and sturdy, the controls are easy to see and understand. It's super user friendly and does a fantastic job. I've only had the microwave 1 month but it is the nicest, most efficient microwave I've ever owned. We had it installed above our countertop, instead of above our oven because our oven is a downdraft in the island. Our cabinet installers did not make sure there was room to allow for the door hinge (for microwave door to open completely, because it was installed very close to an adjacent refrigerator panel). They returned and had to move the cabinetry involved over approximately 3/4 of an inch but our installers were apologetic for not catching that detail and it was a small glitch in our remodel. I love the presets for reheating leftovers and the softening butter preset. It's accompanied by quite a few accessories (I haven't tried them yet) but so far, I couldn't be happier with this appliance!

Bought ours without the box and it didn't have the cardboard mounting template - which, as you can imagine, made the installation tough - but other than that, the unit is amazing. I would urge you to measure the distance between your range and the anticipated base of the microwave. This thing's a BEAST!
