Answer:
Not sure if you are referring to an over the range microwave/hood combination or a microwave in a shelf type setting. See the attached install link for more information, however, the bottom of the microwave is typically mounted approx 14 - 15+ inches above the cooktop surface.

d8r8thyb,
Below is information from the Use and Care Guide concerning cookware. As long as Scanpan falls within these types of cookware it would be fine to use. Also, check to make sure Scanpan cookware is suitable for smoothtop glass cooking surfaces. Types of cookware include: Aluminum, Cast iron, Ceramic or Ceramic glass, Copper, Earthenware, Porcelain enamel on steel, and Stainless Steel
Do not leave empty cookware on a hot surface
cooking area, element or surface burner.
Ideal cookware should have a flat bottom, straight sides, and a
well-fitting lid and the material should be of medium-to-heavy
thickness.
Rough finishes may scratch the cooktop. Aluminum and copper
may be used as a core or base in cookware. However, when used
as a base they can leave permanent marks on the cooktop or
grates.
Cookware material is a factor in how quickly and evenly heat is
transferred, which affects cooking results. A nonstick finish has
the same characteristics as its base material. For example,
aluminum cookware with a nonstick finish will take on the
properties of aluminum.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 73 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Super cooktop! I read reviews warning that this units was a nightmare to clean - it made me leery about purchasing. But there were so many great features! The downdraft allowed us to put this unit into our central island. So great to cook and visit around the island while you face into the room - with no hood vent unit dangling into the middle of the room. I had downdraft before - it kept my kitchen grease-free for 20 years- this one is much more powerful. A wonderful system. The heating is efficient - fast and it seems even - no problems burning things, but I do actually monitor my cooking. I agree that the warmer burner (a great idea!) should have gone to the outside edge rather than beside the downdraft - but I can't think of when I have more than 3 pots going at once to really cause an issue. Back to the cleaning...I've had mine for 3 months it looks like it just came out of the box. Not a drip/cooked on anything, in that time. I do wipe up spills, as soon as it cools, and if the kids have oversprayed cooking oils, I give it a full wipe down in the evening. Using a spray bottle of vinegar water and cooktop cleaner, regularly, has prevent the need for razor-scrapers. I would recommend this to anyone who is willing to do slightly more than normal maintenance - it looks great! But if you are a slob, and unwilling to wipe up - forget it! Then again, I don't know what appliance looks great in that situation. June 21, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Why did I wait so long?! We selected this cooktop for our home we were building. I'd never had the flat surface cooktop before. I Love IT!! Cooks evenly, boils water quickly, clean up is so easy-that was a shock to me. And it looks gorgeous!! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] July 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Cooktop Very pleased with this cooktop. It is very versatile with many burners and heat settings and it looks good with smooth lines . Controls in a comfortable location. Easy to clean, with the right products. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] August 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Look in Kitchen remodel Love the look! This replaced a 30" with large ceiling hood. The downdraft gives a bigger, cleaner look. The metal trim looks great on our granite choice. We didn't think we'd have room for anything in the cabinet with the fan unit below. We were pleasantly surprised to stow away large pots, skillets and splatter screens. The large dual burner also works great for pancakes in a 14" nonstick fry pan. Waited a long time for the install, but all worth it. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] August 1, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Overall Good Cooktop The layout of the heating elements could be better. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] July 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent cooktop Replaced gas cooktop with Kitchen Aid electric. Glad I did. I definitely prefer electric cooking and Kitchen Aid fits my needs. March 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product In January, we replaced a cooktop with very old technology, so we are still adjusting our techniques, but we are very happy with the results. Having a variety of size choices on the burners is a real plus. Two people shouldn't need five burners that include eight options, but we use them all. The dual elements heat very quickly, and all elements heat evenly and consistently (no variation in time it takes to heat the same pot and amount of water from one time to the next). The downdraft works very efficiently; low setting has been sufficient for everything we have cooked to date. We find it easy to use and clean. Most spills and spatters wipe up with dish soap and water, and the special cooktop cleaner takes care of the rest. It still looks brand-new. Our only suggestion for improvement is that KitchenAid design a magnetic device to cover the downdraft when not in use to block outside air and protect the grid from spatters and spills. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Absolutely LOVE it! I just had my cooktop installed two weeks ago and so far I love it! The three dual eyes make it incredibly adjustable to meet any demand. I love the sleek, clean lines and the black glass is beautiful! From reading previous reviews, I learned to use only paper towels and a spray cooktop cleaner - this makes clean up a breeze. I have not had occasion to use the downdraft as yet but it does not seem to be as powerful as my last downdraft. March 14, 2016
