With top control the front of the appliance is cleaner as the buttons are on the top of the door and therefore not visible from the front. Provided there is room between the underside of the counter and the top of the closed door, there is no problem to work the buttons. Answer:
The difference is that small children are unable to access the controls if they are located on the top, under the counter. It also gives the appliance a more sleek look, without having to look at a bunch of buttons/knobs. Easier to clean too, without having to wipe around all the knobs/dials. The controls are only accessible when you open the door. It's also rated the #1 dishwasher!

The difference is mostly aesthetics. Some like the look of semi hidden controls while others prefer the controls on the front. The controls on the top control aren't accessible with the door closed.

Answer:
Just pull the handle (or the top of the door if you haven't yet installed the handle)! The catch is automatic and sturdy. If you haven't installed it yet, you'll have to hold the top of the cabinet as you pull the handle or door otherwise you'll just pull the whole unit across the floor.

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 1089 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quietest dishwasher ever not heard! The young men who came to install my dishwasher were so mannerly and did an excellent job. So far I really love this appliance. It is so quiet I had to open it several times the first time to be sure it was working! And it does a great job of cleaning the dishes. August 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Dishwasher is noisy and trying to get it repaired for the second time - can report later if it is fixed I am currently unhappy with the purchase. I bought this dishwasher because it was rated to be very quiet. It is clearly not and I even got a decibel reader that shows that the dishwasher is running at over 80 decibels. I tried to get it fixed and although the repairman said he could see what the issue was and replaced some parts it did not make any noticeable difference. Waiting for the second trip to see if it can be fixed. If it won't, I would like to return the dishwasher and get one that is quiet. I also paid for the dishwasher to be installed professionally and there was a leak. The first service visit did fix that. August 31, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by A year later I've had this dishwasher for about a year. I replaced a 15 year old base line GE. I bought it after the reading the recommendation on Consumer Reports. It had a top rating compared to the similar GE models. I've tried various detergents, including both the liquid and the pods. For me, I think that Cascade Platinum did the best job. The Cascade Complete did an okay job, but left residue on the dishes. The sani-rinse feature works very well. The third rack is nice for small containers, but I wish there was some type of tie or reinforcement. After reading another review, I realized that I have some unused features, that will probably increase my overall rating. Namely, the height adjustment of the racks, and the sliders. April 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by stainless dishwasher very impressed with the quality of this range. its quiet while on September 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best dishwasher I have owned Dishes get sparkling clean and sanitized. It's so quiet I have to double-check that it is running! Love this dishwasher! September 1, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quiet, cleans well This dishwasher is super quiet, it's the first dishwasher I've ever had in 20+ years of dishwasher use that is quieter than the central heating / cooling fan. It cleans well and has a reasonable layout for loading dishes. It has a small items tray up top, the fold down wine glass stem holder things and slotted tops for the flatware holders so each piece gets a small space to itself to ensure proper washing. All these little touches really do help a lot for getting things clean. Full disclosure, we didn't pay full price due to a sale. If you can get $100 or so off, this is an obvious buy. July 29, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by KitchenAid KDTM354DSS Looks nice, does an excellent job cleaning, efficient internal design, and quiet. Would be 5 stars, but the it was delivered with a noisy motor/pump assembly. I had to schedule two appointments to resolve. August 30, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Dishwasher Didn't know what to expect except what I read in reviews. This is a great dishwasher and cleans well. Have had a little residue left on silverware but easily wipes off ( that's why 4 stars) Overall great product! August 16, 2016
