Funny that the "Kitchenaid Team" states here that the attachment has been redesigned to correct the problem. In my own product research, I have found repeatedly that there are issues with the blue liquid leaking. So I emailed KitchenAid this weekend and told them I had seen hundreds of reviews reporting this issue and I questioned whether it was being addressed or redesigned... I didn't want to buy a faulty product. This is the response I received today (2/8/16):
"Dear Ms. H****,
Thank you for contacting KitchenAid and allowing me the opportunity to respond to your inquiry.
KitchenAid's Ice Cream Maker Attachment does not have any known issues. I would advise that the warranty is for one year, there have been no changes to the design, and that there have been no consistent issues that would warrant a change.
If I may be of further assistance to you, please feel free to respond to this email or you may reach us by calling 1-800-541-6390, Monday through Friday, 8 am until 8 pm, EST.
Thank you for owning KitchenAid.
Sincerely,
Emily

Interesting... Who do you believe? And if it has been redesigned, was there a recall on the old ones? How would you know if you are purchasing an old one or a new one? I really, really want this attachment but I'm not risking purchasing an expensive faulty product, especially when the responses are contradictory. Read Less

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Leaking blue coolant I received this as a gift 2 years ago and initially loved it. It churned really soft creamy ice cream and I loved being able to make my own flavors despite the hassle of finding room in the freezer for the bowl. We made ice cream about 10 times in the past 2 summers. About a month ago, we noticed the bowl would leak a little bit of blue fluid as the ice cream was churning and the bowl warmed up; our solution was to keep the bowl permanently in the freezer so that we could keep making ice cream for the rest of the summer. Now that the summer's over I don't think I can use this again as it has lost too much of the coolant. Will be throwing this away and looking for a better replacement elsewhere. September 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Fun and a wee bit inconvenient Clean out the freezer and plan ahead. You need to have frozen the attachment for 15 hours before using. And, after you make it, freeze the result if you like ice cream more firm than soft serve. That being said, it's awesome. I've had this for about 10 months and make a batch every week or two. We're crazy for the lemon sorbet. Don't try to fake maple with Mrs. Butterworth's - use real syrup. And have a blast with the recipes in the book, more online and in cookbooks. It's fun and tasty...if you plan ahead. I store mine in the freezer now so I'm always ready. October 14, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not quite ice cream... I have had this now for a few years. I have tried and tried to get a good freeze from this but it does not quite work as expected. I freeze the bowl overnight, chill my mix and when I go to make ice cream or sorbet I get to the slush phase, but, nothing beyond that. I then freeze it and it gets icy. No smooth creamy ice cream. I am looking for a new solution. Too bad it was such a waste of money. I would expect a much higher quality item from Kitchenaid. This is the only tool of theirs I have been disapointed in. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Having lots of troubles I love the ice cream maker machine, the thing is the piece that goes into de mixer and makes the machine move, does NOT fit in the mixer head, only once I was able to fit it all crooked and did an ice cream that came out pretty good, after that day, that took me forever to fit it, I haven't been able to do it again.I bought it in Mexico and they can not change the little part for me and here they don't ship outside USA, I don´t even know if they can ship just the piece. So, it is a great machine, just be careful when you buy it to be sure the pice fix your mixer..now I have a machine that can not use!! too sad!! September 26, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bad mechanical drive design The drive adapter/mechanism is not a good fit and can't "push" through the thickening mix. I have tried 6 batches and only one got even close to ice cream before the drive head couldn't handle the pressure and started "skipping" and then just about destroyed itself. The mixer head was pushing against the head lock and almost destroyed itself. So unfortunate. October 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Ice Cream Churn I loved the ice cream attachment so much I purchased a second one. I have used both a couple of times to make ice cream and gelato and they perform great. The nice thing is that I can make ice cream of gelato and know exactly what ingredients I am putting in and know where they came from and not have to worry about what a large multi-national food corporation is putting in my ice cream or gelato. The ice cream we made with this mixer was the better than anything we could have ever purchased from the store. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] September 25, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Wish it had better features I recieved this as a gift. I really wanted it. I have had this product for 7 years. I have found that i do not use it very often. I think i have only used it 2 times. In order to use this item, i have freeze it for a minimum of 15 hours prior to use. After doing so, i can only make one batch of tasty treats and then i have to wash and refreeze to use again. With all of the technology out there, i would think there would be a way of a programmed product that will freeze on its own with out having to freeze the product first. To top this off, i have to make a plan well in advance, so that i have room in my tiny freezer for the bowl. I would rather have a product that could be used on a whim with no preplanning September 5, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Coolant leaked, ice cream did not get hard in the churn My bowl leaked blue stuff in the freezer and on the counter. The ice cream could not be eaten straight from the bowl, it had to go in the freeer for a while because it was too soft. October 1, 2016
