Funny that the "Kitchenaid Team" states here that the attachment has been redesigned to correct the problem. In my own product research, I have found repeatedly that there are issues with the blue liquid leaking. So I emailed KitchenAid this weekend and told them I had seen hundreds of reviews reporting this issue and I questioned whether it was being addressed or redesigned... I didn't want to buy a faulty product. This is the response I received today (2/8/16):
"Dear Ms. H****,
Thank you for contacting KitchenAid and allowing me the opportunity to respond to your inquiry.
KitchenAid's Ice Cream Maker Attachment does not have any known issues. I would advise that the warranty is for one year, there have been no changes to the design, and that there have been no consistent issues that would warrant a change.
If I may be of further assistance to you, please feel free to respond to this email or you may reach us by calling 1-800-541-6390, Monday through Friday, 8 am until 8 pm, EST.
Thank you for owning KitchenAid.
Sincerely,
Emily

Interesting... Who do you believe? And if it has been redesigned, was there a recall on the old ones? How would you know if you are purchasing an old one or a new one? I really, really want this attachment but I'm not risking purchasing an expensive faulty product, especially when the responses are contradictory. Read Less

Ice Cream Maker Attachment for KitchenAid Stand Mixers is rated 2.6 out of 5 by 242.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Leaking blue coolant I received this as a gift 2 years ago and initially loved it. It churned really soft creamy ice cream and I loved being able to make my own flavors despite the hassle of finding room in the freezer for the bowl. We made ice cream about 10 times in the past 2 summers. About a month ago, we noticed the bowl would leak a little bit of blue fluid as the ice cream was churning and the bowl warmed up; our solution was to keep the bowl permanently in the freezer so that we could keep making ice cream for the rest of the summer. Now that the summer's over I don't think I can use this again as it has lost too much of the coolant. Will be throwing this away and looking for a better replacement elsewhere.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fine until it breaks Not much to say. It was fun making ice cream at home until the day I opened my freezer and found blue liquid all over the place. It took me a while to figure out that it had leaked out of this ice cream attachment. I only hope it isn't too toxic.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad design We worked a great deal of the evening trying to get this to work. There is no way that there can be enough tension on the beater to keep this mixing, especially when the mix begins to freeze. It just starts skipping and stripping the plastic which are great little things to have in your mix. Very disappointing for a brand with such a good reputation.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun and a wee bit inconvenient Clean out the freezer and plan ahead. You need to have frozen the attachment for 15 hours before using. And, after you make it, freeze the result if you like ice cream more firm than soft serve. That being said, it's awesome. I've had this for about 10 months and make a batch every week or two. We're crazy for the lemon sorbet. Don't try to fake maple with Mrs. Butterworth's - use real syrup. And have a blast with the recipes in the book, more online and in cookbooks. It's fun and tasty...if you plan ahead. I store mine in the freezer now so I'm always ready.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Leaks blue liquid after a while I bought this about 3 years ago and only use it a few times a year. It seemed to work fine, but then it started leaking blue liquid, which is now all over my freezer. I typically love the KitchenAid brand and am genuinely surprised by this level of quality, especially at this price point.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes delicious Ice Cream I purchased the Ice cream maker last month for my Kitchenaid stand mixer. So far I made fabulous creamy vanilla and chocolate Ice cream. I loved the idea of making fresh homemade Ice cream for my family, including, adding fruit into the mix-- strawberries, raspberries, peaches or in the summer I grow blackberries will make it even better!! Kitchenaid makes durable products which I recently also purchased food grinder and the rotor slicer/shredder attachments for my 6 qt. stand mixer which I had for many years. I'm very pleased I purchased all of them making it faster to make any meals and I find I can attach them to my mixer very easily. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Leaked Blue Coolant We used our bowl a handful of times and it worked well. We got it out yesterday to make ice cream for a get together and the ice cream just would not freeze. We then found blue coolant leaking from the bottom. We love KitchenAid products but definitely can't recommend this one. We are well outside our warranty, and have long since lost the receipt.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad mechanical drive design The drive adapter/mechanism is not a good fit and can't "push" through the thickening mix. I have tried 6 batches and only one got even close to ice cream before the drive head couldn't handle the pressure and started "skipping" and then just about destroyed itself. The mixer head was pushing against the head lock and almost destroyed itself. So unfortunate.
