Funny that the "Kitchenaid Team" states here that the attachment has been redesigned to correct the problem. In my own product research, I have found repeatedly that there are issues with the blue liquid leaking. So I emailed KitchenAid this weekend and told them I had seen hundreds of reviews reporting this issue and I questioned whether it was being addressed or redesigned... I didn't want to buy a faulty product. This is the response I received today (2/8/16):
"Dear Ms. H****,
Thank you for contacting KitchenAid and allowing me the opportunity to respond to your inquiry.
KitchenAid's Ice Cream Maker Attachment does not have any known issues. I would advise that the warranty is for one year, there have been no changes to the design, and that there have been no consistent issues that would warrant a change.
If I may be of further assistance to you, please feel free to respond to this email or you may reach us by calling 1-800-541-6390, Monday through Friday, 8 am until 8 pm, EST.
Thank you for owning KitchenAid.
Sincerely,
Emily

Interesting... Who do you believe? And if it has been redesigned, was there a recall on the old ones? How would you know if you are purchasing an old one or a new one? I really, really want this attachment but I'm not risking purchasing an expensive faulty product, especially when the responses are contradictory. Read Less

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 2.6 out of 5 by 181 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Results I purchased this Ice Cream Maker Attachment in the summer of 2008. I used it once before storing it away and recently resurrected it after seeing a television commercial. It creates incredibly tasty sorbet (I made Lemon Yesterday for the first time) and previously a Vanilla Custard Style Ice Cream which was deliciously creamy and decadent. Unlike the other reviewers I have not experienced any issues with leaking fluids etc. perhaps because I have an older model. My lift stand mixer was purchased as a wedding gift for my husband and I back in 1987. It was such an incredible gift and not a week goes by that I have not used it. Kitchen Aide products performed for our family. May 30, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by A huge disappointment. I am an avid Kitchenaid supporter. I have two stand mixers and almost all of the attachments to go with them. I went to use the ice cream maker for the first time today and what a disappointment. The bucket was stored in the freezer for weeks and thawed out so fast that the ice cream never hardened. It ended up turning into more of a liquid then when I started. This attachment does not reflect the high quality that I am used to with Kitchenaid items. I will not be recommending this to anyone else. June 12, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Incredibly Disappointing. At first, this seemed like an excellent product. Convenient, worked well, and easy to use. We have used it < 10 times and followed all the care instructions. Unfortunately, it developed a very small crack next to the "handle" part of the bowl (not even in a typical location), and began leaking the blue fluid inside. It's now useless. I contacted customer service with the complaint, but because it was received as a wedding gift, we do not have receipt. Instead of fixing their defective product, they offered to sell us another one at a discount of $66. Now, apparently this is a common problem with this mixer, and it's definitely not worth my money to buy another poorly made product. I would expect more from this product and from KitchenAid in general. Save your money, buy a different ice cream maker. June 13, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Read and Follow the Tips I've used the ice cream attachment once and learned a valuable lesson: reading is fundamental! My mistake was that my batter was too thick and I couldn't figure out how to pour the batter into the mixer while the blade was moving and not make a mess. So, I stopped the mixer after I'd spooned in some of the batter. BIG MISTAKE. Per the instructions, you MUST NOT STOP the mixer once you've started pouring batter. I tried to restart it and the blade was stuck. I mixed the ice cream by hand intermittently over 30 minutes (which still worked amazingly well because it freezes the ice cream in the bowl). I rated 4 on "ease of use" because I still can't figure out how to get the batter in the bowl without making a mess. May 21, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Problem remaining engaged Received this as a gift and am having an issue with the adapter staying seated on the mixer head - it doesn't want to slide on snugly as shown in the photos - I have a Kitchenaid Classic K45SS and according to the literature this IC maker should work. Any suggestions? June 7, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Great until leak Loved using my ice cream maker last summer. I made a ton of delicious ice creams and sorbets. I just put it back in the freezer and like other people have had leakage of blue fluid. Makes me wonder if there is something wrong with the design. June 8, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Leaks Blue Fluid We bought this last year and used a couple of times. When I went to get it out of the cabinet yesterday it had leaked blue fluid all over and stained my cabinets. It continues to leak blue fluid if I tip a little and isn't usable. June 8, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Leaks blue fluid I received this as a gift at my wedding shower and I was so excited to try it. I used it once without an issue and now it leaks the blue fluid. I'm so disappointed that this only worked one time. Since it seems like everyone else is having the same issue there's not sense in replacing it to have the same thing happen again. June 13, 2016
