Answer:
Yes, denatured alcohol is the proper thinner for shellac, and what you would use to dissolve shellac flakes. However, I'm not sure what makes this exact product "green," and if it would perform the same as regular denatured alcohol when used with shellac.
I was actually looking through the questions and answers to see if anyone had tried this with shellac.
Best of luck to you!

Answer:
The Klean-Strip Green Denatured Alcohol is up to 10% Methanol, see the MSDS. Methanol is a skin absorbant toxin that leads to damage of the liver. Skin contact should be avoided. Inhaling should be avoided.
The non-green version of denatured alcohol can be up to 50% methanol.

Customer Reviews

Rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Close Match to My Braun Shaver's Expensive Cleaning Fluid Since the MSDS states this product is 90-100% ethanol, it is virtually an identical match to my Braun electric shaver's "cleaning and renewing" fluid (per that product's MSDS). Just save the spent cartridge, wash it out, refill it with this alcohol through the small hole, and (not required) add a few drops of limonene, citral, or cologne if you like. Be aware that other brands of denatured alcohol may contain much more methanol. I would check MSDS's, play it safe, and go with the close match. March 28, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by CLEAN efficient fuel source for alcohol stoves I recently purchased this product after the MSDS showed about 90% ethanol/10%methanol content - higher ethanol content will burn more clean and hot. This was by far the highest ratio for a denatured alcohol I was able to find that is commercially available. Tried it out in a few homemade backpacking alcohol stoves and it was excellent with a clean flame and no detectable soot buildup on the pots used over the flame. I highly recommend this as far as use as a clean burning fuel source at a decent price (~$0.23 per fl oz). July 12, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I cannot compare this product to any other one i have used but i will use this as a benchmark to compare others to. This product is user friendly for the purpose that i purchased it. It performed well within its description. March 27, 2013
