I am buying a house where the owner had a diesel pickup. Because he started it in the garage, there is a film of diesel soot on the walls and ceiling. The walls are drywall and painted white. How can I remove the soot and will I need to repaint after cleaning?

Answer:
The TSP Substitute will lighten it a bit, but nothing will completely remove it on white painted drywall. You'll have to clean it, prime and paint it to make it look new again.

TSP is a good first step for removing and covering engine soot from the walls and ceiling. Getting the soot completely out of the walls and ceiling is not going to happen unless you replace the drywall. So, in order for it to look better and smell better, there are a few steps you need to do.
First, clean the surface with TSP. This will prep the areas before priming and painting. Ceiling and walls in garages are typically a flat finish, so using the TSP will probably take off some of the paint.
Next, prime the surface with either an oil based or shellac based paint. This will seal in the smell and prevent the stains from peaking through the paint.
Lastly, paint the walls and ceiling with either an oil or latex based paint. Typically people prefer latex based because it is easier to work with.
Have a great day!

Answer:
This product is designed to etch surfaces as well for repainting, so I wouldn't take a chance using it on Trex decking.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 3.7 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by TSP substitute..just the ticket Excellent cleaning and surface prep for my touch up project on my painted kitchen cabinets. It did not strip the existing paint or dull it but left a very clean and grease free surface for the touch up. As always I find the staff to be helpful , willing to take me to the location of the item I am seeking and /or give advice as to use or what will work the best. Perry Thompson is my favorite "go to guy" as there is nothing in the do it yourself world that he doesn't know about and is so generous in sharing his knowledge and experience. November 4, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Ruined my cabinets I have done several DIY projects that involved painting, refurbishing, etc. I have painted kitchen cabinets (that I did myself) and wanted to touch up a few that were starting to show some wear. I had bought thus TSP substitute to use on the underside of my cabinets that were greasy, as I had decided to paint that unfinished part to match the cabinet boxes/frames. Since I had it, I used it on the couple cabinets I was going to repaint as well as my island I was repainting. The surfaces I used this on are ruined!! They all have a very chalky, flat-type finish to them now. I have tried several things to remedy it ad get them back to what they were, but no luck. And the person I talked to when I called their customer service number (who was a so-called handyman) might have been the rudest, most arrogant person I have talked to. Since others have rated it well, just wondering if the product shouldn't be used in a way that I did...no clue what went wrong. Something like this has never happened to me....and I have done lots of home projects! November 7, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Watery Clean I used this product for the purpose of cleaning the kitchen walls before putting up my kitchen backsplash tile. It was very watery and required two white towels for a "wax on wax off" experience. Nonetheless, it cleaned my kitchen walls to it's original fresh paint look. Due to it's effective cleaning, I continued to clean other items in my home with the product. March 4, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great stuff that actually works! You don't find too many cleaning supplies that actually live up to claims... but this stuff does. Took the soot and stains right off my fireplace brick (and the grout) with minimal effort. Fireplace sparkles now. April 22, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Its Okay I use It straight from the bottle to wipe down the walls before painting.Cleans and deglazes. April 8, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by tsp SUBSTITUTE Note the word - SUBSTITUTE. Translated this means "SECOND TIER" product. No where near as good as old fashioned REAL Tri-Sodium Phosphate, which helps with paint adhesion. This product does clean, just not as good as the REAL thing, and requires more work to get the dirt off. November 5, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Liquid TSP Great product to prepare roof for elastomeric coating. Just pour entire bottle into two gallon bucket with about a gallon of water and brush on then rinse small sections of the roof. May 14, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not as good as TSP This product is good for cleaning grease from a stove, but not the best for paint preparation. It takes a long time to dry and does not increase paint adhesion. June 4, 2013
