We were starting into a bathroom and kitchen remodel when the contractor told us that we had to test for lead paint since my home was built in 1970. I looked on line and that's what the EPA now requires. After reading about other products that only worked on some surfaces, I found the “D-Lead Paint Test Kit” online. It works on metal, wood, draywall and plaster. It was available at Home Depot, so I bought a box of test kits.
The D-Lead kit directions were easy to follow, and I tested the paint on the drywall, baseboards, doors and window. The paint on the window sill turned the test solution brown (from clear) right away... in other words, we had lead paint. Our contractor called a lead removal renovation expert. It wasn't cheap, but we no longer have a lead paint problem.
Without the D-Lead Test, we would never have known.
The D-Lead kit was quick and easy. I’d recommend it.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by DIMS1111 Expired!
Bought this kit to test paint on an antique beveled glass window. I did a test and got "no lead" results. Then I noticed another test strip to make sure the test was in good working order. It failed and I discovered it was 6 months past expired! Returned it, and tried to buy another, and the whole inventory was expired. This is disconcerting since the failure results seem to be the same as "no lead". Can't find this test anywhere that is not expired. Swabs won't work in my case because the paint is reddish, and you can't tell if that means lead or just red paint rubbing off.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Sirfixalot Should have bought the 3M test kit
The test kit I bought has an expiration date of 7/31/2015. Fortunately the kit includes test strips for verifying the second solution. Using the test strips, I was able to determine that the solution was no good. The 3M test swabs are a lot easier to use and I've never had a problem with them not working.

Just what I needed to check for lead paint before we started sanding and scraping a house before painting.

Mine was expired by 6 months (note: test solution 2 is the only thing that expires, the rest of the kit has a long shelf life - per the manufacturer); a real pain in the butt to use (terrible instructions and lots of steps), returned it, and went elsewhere to get the 3M lead check kit, quick and simple. HD should stock the 3M kit instead of only offering it online.
