Is there a way to weather proof the box from water getting into it used a marine weather striping still gets wet inside

Asked by: Sully
One reason this box is lower priced then others is because of the design. If you are in a Marine environment, pick the box that has a raised 1+" lip around all four sides under the cover, without a break, that has a separate hinge that sits outside that raised lip. That way when the water hits the hinge, it will go through the hinge, but, not into the box, because the hinge sits outside the continuous raised lip and lower then the lip. Since you already bought this one, I suggest this. Get a small diameter inner tube, slit lengthwise, and glue it over the hinge on both sides, that allows it to flex/fold when open.

Which lock should we purchase for this job box?

Even a call to Klein gave us only the" Masterlock #5". We need more information- a specification- for the lock. Number 5 indicates the strength, not the dimensions. Is there not a NAME or some LABEL to to grab off the shelf? Thanks. Should it be sold along with the box????

I decided to buy this even though some people had said the build quality was marginal. When I got it home and took the box off, I found the front was caved in and one of the legs was not welded correctly. Since the box had no dents, I am assuming the caved in front was done at the factory and they sent it out anyway. It went back and I will buy a different box that is a little more expensive as clearly Klein's quality control is lacking. if you decide to buy, check it before buying to verify it has no problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Made, Big Box for lots of tools, Compared to the Rigid of same size; much bigger hinge, stronger reinforcement in lock area, reinforced edges around lips of lid and box, reinforced braces in corners, more welds, dual lid supports, stonger handles, thicker weld beads on edges, stronger lid design, knock-outs in rear and bottom for cords (not removed), no sliding removeable shelf but small matter compared to extra quality. A 120db break-in alarm inside would discourage theft plus it would make lot of noise to bust this thing open. Its like a giant gong and beating it with a sledge hammer would wake the dead. Bright paint color but finish is not quite as spiffy as the Rigid brand box, although it is quite attractive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I was looking for I read several of the reviews on this chest before purchasing and was concerned because some seemed to have issues finding a suitable lock. I bought the Master Magnum locks as described in one of the answered questions and they worked fine. Any Master or American lock of similar size should work. The problem I found the other reviewers to be having was probably a misunderstanding of the installation instructions. If you attempt to install the padlock by inserting it from the outside of the box, it will not fit. The lock must be attached to the locking clip and inserted from the inside of the box. The build quality is as expected for the price, but suits my needs just fine as an inexpensive gun chest to keep the children and unprepared criminals.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Reasonable Security The box is constructed of 16 gauge steel, the feet of 14 gauge steel, and the small box sections that house the locks are 12 gauge steel. The packaging on the box indicates 12 gauge construction, which is very inaccurate (12 gauge is 50% thicker than 16 gauge). The piano hinge is stitch welded, but the box seems appear to be fully welded. For the price, it's a decent value considering that other brands charge twice the price for a 16 gauge box.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent Tool Box & Master #175D Combo Locks Work Well I just bought 2 of the 24"x48" boxes. I read the horror stories of Master #5 locks (keyed) not fitting. After doing some home work and a test I found that Master 175D combo locks work and fit very well inside the recessed area. Simple to mount, they appear to be slightly thinner in the body of the lock compared to #5, but NO KEY is exactly what I was looking for. Master #175 D combo locks with 1" shackle clearance are the ticket.
