Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Looks Good - But a Challenge to Hang I bought this large mural for my daughter’s room and while the color is rich and the image striking – getting it up successfully proved to be exasperatingly difficult (and required liberal use of harsh language). In the spirit of full disclosure, I’m just a typical home-owner. I’ve put up wall paper and boarders in the past (successfully) and have better than average skills (and tools) for a job like this. Still, it was awfully difficult and the poorly written instructions (in about 10 languages) offered not even a hint of useful advice. For starters, the full image is actually eight (8) individual panels and the image registration is poor, so lining up the panels is difficult to begin with. And don’t even think about using the paste that comes with the mural (it requires careful mixing and still comes out the consistency of Chicken Chow Mein…and about as lumpy). Save yourself a few blood pressure points and pitch the included bag of cheap powder directly into the trash can. Instead, buy a good quality pre-mixed wallpaper paste from Home Depot – you’ll be glad you did. The other main challenge I encountered was cutting the paper. Since this is thin paper (by wall paper standards) – and not vinyl – getting a clean cut of the pasted (and now soggy) paper requires an industrial laser. Even my sharpest blades simply snagged the paper and tore it. After some frantic searching (watching the paper adhere to the trim) my wife produced a rolling razor cutter (used to cut fabric). This worked pretty well – but couldn’t reach the corners (which we cut using a good set of scissors). When all was done, the Mural did look okay though shrinkage was larger than expected (easily 3 to 4 mm per panel) and gaps between panels did open up (fortunately, the wall behind the mural was blue so hid much of this). If you’re planning to hang this yourself – take a yoga class first to find some inner peace…and leave yourself plenty of time. Good luck! July 26, 2012
