Customer Questions & Answers

is it an under counter wine cooler

Asked by: magg
This WC29 Koolatron is not designed to be a built in. It cools the refrigerant by radiation of heat through the metal skin and the open area in the back. It will require air circulation around the sides and back. It can only be under a counter if allowed good space all around. The unit is shallow enough to allow space in the back when the front is 24 inches from the wall. Height is likely short enough to be under a counter, but it will need to have an open area all around. I would not recommend to use it under a counter. A natural tendency would be for people to use the open space beside the unit for storage, and that would create a problem.

Is the minimum temperature on this unit really 65F???

White wines can be stored at a much lower temperature. Since this is a dual temp unit, it doesn't seem likely that the lowest temperature is 65. Please clarify. Thanks.
Asked by: Rene
No, 65F is not the lowest temperature, more like the highest. Lowest is actually about 42F. Since this is a compressor based unit, it has no trouble cooling. Just make sure you have space on the sides and back for radiation of the heat. No condenser fan, so not made to be a built in. If you prefer, you can have the controls show temps in Celsius. Might have to read the instruction a couple of times to make the change but its easy to do. Mine came with the setting on Celsius so I had to change it to Fahrenheit.

Pros: Turns out this company has a very good shipping package, double boxed. Arrived in perfect condition. I bought this for a gift, but took it out and set it up for about two weeks. I used a thermometer in both sections. It was easy to learn the controls, and performance was right on even though I frequently opened the door to move things around. It is possible to arrange so as to store some larger bottles. It is also a very attractive unit and operates near silent with no evidence of vibration. The interior light makes for a really cool appearance. This is also a compressor driven refrigerator. More effective than the thermoelectric type which struggle when used in higher ambient temperature locations. I bought this Koolatron to replace a thermoelectric unit that works very well but is picky about where and how it's placed. I like this Koolatron WC29 a lot, highly reccommended. Cons: Like many other wine coolers, the advertised bottle capacity is possible only if all bottles are slim. I don't see any way to reverse the doors. Standing in front of the unit it opens from my left. It does not have a cooling fan for the refrigerant condenser. It cools refrigerant by radiation from the metal skin, therefore will require significant space on the sides as well as the back for reliable long term performance. When in operation, you can feel the warmth on the sides. Do not touch the compressor which is open in the back, it will be hot when in operation. Not designed to be a built in unit. Also kind of heavy, best to have two people to move it around or put up on a counter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Wine Refrigerator This is an actual refrigerator.. That's good, and efficient. The bottle storage is a bit unconventional, but the thin bottle of white wine work fine up near the light in the top. There is no handle to reach out and grab your clothing as was the case with our other wine cooler. The slim, trim design of this unit is really nice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks great Looks great in the kitchen. Not too loud as some reported. Shelves directly under lights do not have clearance for any wine bottles. Shelves only hold standard wine bottles. Definitely not tall bottles and not enough clearance between shelves for wine bottles that are even slightly bigger around. Haven't been able to get my warranty registration to go through on Koolatron's website. It keeps showing an error on page, so that is troubling, but they only cover 90 days anyway.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Overall Picked up this product from store on 2/27/15. Slots directly underneath the lights are not big enough to fit a bottle so the capacity is not truly 29 bottles. Also even slightly over-sized bottles will not fit in the normal slots. Runs fairly quietly. One issue I have is that once the refrigerator is running, I cannot change the temperature settings. The only time I've been able to change the temperature settings is once the unit is plugged back in after being unplugged for 3-5 minutes. Other than that the unit looks great and so far is running well.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent deal Compared to higher end coolers and their cost I feel this is a good wine cooler. It is super quiet. It will not work very well if you put it against the wall or in a "cubby" hole. I ventilated an island I put it in and it works like a champ. The controls has a lock button on it that seems to thwart some reviewers on Amazon and here. You have to unlock the controls to change temp settings. The shelves and layout of the bottles is HORRIBLE. It is what kills this from getting a 4 or 5 star rating. HORRIBLE. It's like the shelves were designed for coke bottles. It sort of blows my mind that someone made this and thought the bottle storage design is good enough to say it is a 29 bottle cooler. But, for the price and the way we use it, I can live with it. (I am a commercial electrical contractor (20 yrs) and deal with thousands of appliance installs and have a fairly good understanding of high, average, and poor my opinion of course :))

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good so far We just purchased this two weeks ago. It was easy to setup, is running quietly, and looks attractive. Part of the back panel is open which threw me off in the beginning. I called customer service and they answered within a minute which was a nice surprise. They confirmed that the opening on the back is for ventilation. So far so good.
