The "Kool Expert" referred to this as a tumbler. It is not. Turning the contents is difficult and smelly.

Can someone post additional pictures of the actual installed composter? What happens to the liquid accumulated at the bottom? Is there a drain? Does this need to be anchored into the ground? Are there holes on the lid to let the smell out?

I cannot get the lid off this thing

Can anyone give me any tips? I tried for 30 minutes but still can't get it off. I may have to return it because I just can't get the lid off. :(
Asked by: Lolo
You have to turn the lid until the slots on the lid are lined up with the openings on the composter and the lid will then lift off

Customer Reviews

50 gal. Composter is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A simple & practical design Koolatron CSS-50 is a practical design composter. I spent a lot of effort to find a good engineered product before seeing it. There are some good featured composters on the market, but their practical operation and robustness seem not meet my expectation. For example, it is difficult to turn rotator-style composters when they are 1/4 or 1/2 capacity loaded. The leverage of the length is 1/2 the diameter of the tank so some reviewers’ highlighted this issue for the tumbler-composters. Also, the sophisticated movable mechanism is less reliable than a simple design. The hinges, rotators, and bearings might not last long in the outdoors. The metal parts would get rusty which I saw on two tumbler composters with rusty structures at Home depot. Finally, the various separate pieces need more effort to put together. I like CSS-50 as a simple & practical design even though a big hole was chewed by an animal at one of the aeration holes. I patched the problem with my solution. I recommend this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Blends in with the pots! It is difficult to find a smaller sized composter that looks good; so far, this is one of the better ones. I have only had it for a short time (one week) so can't rate it on the composting process. I can say that the shipping process went smoothly; it was easy to move it to the location I wanted it in; and it is not a major eyesore. The lid is somewhat difficult to take off, I could not do it with one hand. I just marked the tabs with some red fingernail polish so I would know where the tabs matched up rather than playing a guessing game. All in all, I am happy with the product and would recommend it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Composter Too early to tell how well it'll work . Very good conversation piece. We tell people that it's a family size funeral urn!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Looking Composter We were looking for something that was not black, ugly and made the yard look awful. We found the Kool Shape Sandstone composter at the Home Depot web site. Easy to order, shipped within a week right to the door, in place within 10 minutes. Great size, nice look - only issue is the grip on the lid - it is not easy to open. Needs a bit more groove for the hand to catch in the lid handle. Other than that - I have it filled up already.
