We do not recommend using Krud Kutter Rustex on painted surfaces. This product is designed for rusted areas only. This product needs to rust in order to form the chemical reaction to convert the surface. If applied to non-rusted surfaces it will not fully cure and will remain tacky on the surface.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 9 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good product. First time user of this product. It works well and am very pleased with it. Brushed it on let stand 24 hours and all the rust turned black. Primer and paint and I was done. June 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product, price Product works just exactly as advertised, turning rusted metal into a black, sealed surface. Seems to require minimum preparation on even badly rusted items, such as a twenty five year old boat trailer and so far, with a minimal overcoat of enamel paint, has not shown rust through. Much more economical than other rust converters and easily applied. I use a pump up garden sprayer for large items (just flush with water after) and as cheap as it is, soak smaller ones and save it for the next time.. December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works as advertised After thoroughly sanding/wire brush the crusty rust, the fine rust was converted to a smooth dark finish suitable for priming and painting. Used during the repair of a car frame -this should insure that the repairs last a long time. The product is great, however, I had to order this online. This SHOULD be a product that is available in the paint department AT HOME DEPOT. August 27, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by it worked for the most part It would work on light rust. The rust I was treating was heavy rust. October 13, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by It works, but... I bought 2 gallons to cover 350 square feet of steel ceiling. The product turns out to be thin like water and covers a lot of area. I only used 1/2 gallon . When I painted over it with oil base primer two days later, I discovered that some droplets were not fully cured. Make sure to blend in all droplets after application. December 11, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by does what it says Smells vinegary. Applied with brush strokes on angled high pitched roof, drips down by gravity, and catch before the chemical reacts. After dual coats on some areas that require it I will rinse off chalky residue or if it rains hard enough I will not wave to rinse off residue. Roof looks beautiful and antiqued with this application, was a light shade of gray and rusty before, now looks like a green dark gray shaded patina. Too bad I can't keep it that color because the tin roof will eventually have a white "elastomeric ( metal roof friendly )" coatings, later in the year. August 6, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exactly what I needed I bought this to convert the rust on my 97 Chevy Blazer and it worked wonderfully. I poured it into a spray bottle and applied it to the rusty parts throughout the truck and frame and it did exactly what I wanted it to - changed it from rust to black paintable metal. Very happy I bought this and I only used half the bottle for the whole truck. October 14, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointed Product did not work as well as I had expected. Disappointed. October 1, 2014
