What stops an intruder from rekeying your lock?

according to the internet these locks can easily be rekeyed by the criminal easy as bumping a lock
Asked by: Desperate2
an intruder would simply need to gain access to the key , get a photo of key and decode cuts and make a new key , example . if you are at home and have people over , and say u have a nap. all the bad person needs is your key for ten seconds and anotherold or precut kw1 key which is very easy to get , and a paperclip or any thin tip of an object that fits in slit. they rekey it , you end up leaving , and you dont know your lock is rekeyed until you come home and by then you are cleaned out. opposed to a regular rekey whuch requires taking lock off and needing pins and rekeying tools. i think its a bad security comprimise that could easily be taken advantage of. lets not even get into all the bypass methods these locks have. and they can be rekeyed without an old key... with a rekey cradle or by taking it apart and lining up wafers again...these are nice to rekey but way too many security risks if you need it for something important to be protected. you can also buy decoders for these , and i know other non destrucive bypass methods anyone could learn. i am a locksmith and advise carefully where you use this lock

can all 3 be keyed the same?

Asked by: Anonymous
if you buy smart key locks you can rekey them all to the same key if you have the lock reset tool and the original key to the lock. I bought 3 new locks including a knob with lock and I rekeyed all 3 to the same key for my rental companies convenience.

How many times can the lock be re-keyed?

Asked by: AY
I'm assuming unlimited. You put your working key in the lock as well as the small re-keying key that comes with the lock. Turn 90 degrees to the right and pull out your working key and replace with the key you want to change to (KW1 Key). Pull out the small re-keying key, turn back to top and it should be rekeyed. It looks like you could do it as many time as you like as long as you have the apporpriate key that fits into the lock. When you buy it new it comes with two working keys but i immediately changed it to my working key.

Can this deadbolt be attached to already existing thumbturn?

The house i just moved into has a deadbolt on the front door that attaches to a small thumbturn on the inside of the house. I would like to keep the small thumb turn. Would it be possible to attach this deadbolt to the already existing thumbturn?
Asked by: Blue
Unless the old deadbolt is a Kwikset brand, I'm doubtful that this will work. However, that being said, I have two recommendations for your consideration: 1. Go ahead and buy a new Kwikset deadbolt set. Remove the old outside part and see if the new outside part will match up with your older inside thumb-turn. You also may have to remove and install the new latch mechanism, that's the part that is moved in & out of the door frame. This I recommend as this part can get worn out. If they match, then you'll have the new outer part which has SmartKey and is new. If it doesn't work then you will have to decide whether or not to remove and install the new thumb-turn part. 2. Remove your old deadbolt, including the inside thumb-turn and take it to a local Home Depot or other Big Box store and ask for a salesperson who is familiar with locksets and ask them if the two parts will match up. It may turn out that the old inside thumb-turn is a different brand that is sold there and you could buy it instead of the Kwikset brand. A note of caution: You don't know who has a key to those door locks on the house you just moved into. I highly recommend doing one of the following: 1. Either buying new locksets, including the entrance handle set and dead bolts for all exterior doors when moving into a new or old house. OR 2. Have a professional locksmith visit you and rekey all those exterior locks. OR 3. You remove all your exterior door locksets and take them to a professional locksmith and have them rekeyed. Doing this yourself will save money from having the locksmith come to your home.

I love the Kwikset Smartkey feature and I have several other Kwikset Smartkeys all keyed the same. However...the quality control on this lock was lacking. Right off the bat the package was missing a mounting screw for the bolt - not a big deal. But I had such a pain getting the main mounting screws to go in correctly. I ended up having to test fit the screws before installing it but when I did that I ended up with two dimples in the metal on the front "Kwikset" bezel/cover plate that goes around where you put the key in. Apparently there is nothing to stop the extra-long screws from bumping into the bezel - poor design! And after I installed the lock, the bolt mechanism was so tight that I ended up having to loosen the mounting screws enough (leaving the lock almost loosely mounted) to allow the bolt mechanism to slide smoothly. I don't like returning products but this one is going back ASAP.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst on the Market If you are looking for security do not choose this deadbolt. If you are using the smartkey, expect it to fail within a year. These locks are made from potmetal and meet the minimum grade of the ANSI standards. DO NOT BUY!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bump Proof If you don't know what lock bumping is you should learn. I bought this lock because it is bump proof. It is advertised as Bump Resistant. However I was unable to bump it because it uses wafers instead of pins. The smart key re-key is a nice feature too. You can re-key in no time to any old key you have laying around or if someone is house setting you can key it to there house key. I gave it 5 stars because of the feature's and the price.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not bad. But.... Bought because I wanted to use the washroom door to the garage with the keys of the front door. So, SMARTKEY is ideal for it. The problem is that in the box no SMARTKEY tool, although the tool should be there according to the description.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No surprises Was looking to upgrade a sticky deadbolt, this was a perfect replacement. The ReKey feature is nice (no visit to a keymaker required!), and the swap is straightforward with no complications.
