We have it for about 2 months already, we were excited and planned to add a wifi feature, but recently we noticed that it could unlock without any reason. It is scary :( What could we do about it?

Take it out and return it. Seriously, sorry but even the Gen 2 version doesn't really work (or in your case works too much). I was amazed just how much better a physical key is to use over this "smart" lock. And as you've seen, with a key you know when it is locked and when it is not, simply.

Can you remotely add and remove temporary access when away from the house?

Asked by: MarkR
Yes. There is a "Guest" feature for the ekey. You can do this through either the installed app or on the web ( IF you add the Kevo Plus gateway, you can lock and auto lock from anywhere.

Customer Reviews

Kevo 2nd Generation Touch-To-Open Smart Lock Single-Cylinder Satin Nickel Electronic Deadbolt Featuring SmartKey is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 34.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost a good thing Out of the box this looks like a nice lock assemble, solid construction modern looking . First you must know that you need a free App loaded on you smart phone if you want this lock to do the basics. If your looking to have Kevo do all the cool things like Un lock a door from a remote location etc. well you need to buy a propriety bridge. There also other options that could be purchased. Just a FYI as this pushes up the cost of haveIng a full function Kevo lock assembly. There are no monthly , yearly fees beyond the cost of the Bridge so that a good thing and will work with basic functions without the bridge. . The system is also compatible with Nest, Ring and other products. At the time of writing I'm to understand they are really just quick access to the compatible apps. Since I have not purchased the bridge this review will concentrated on just the lock assemble. Fit and finish is nice and all the exterior surfaces are metal. Installation is straight foward a few extra steps vs a normal dead bolt. My box didn't come with paper install instructions but through the app was access to a PDF and a step by step option. The bolt is sturdy but not as much as the Titian bolt I'm replacing. One assembled on the door you need to put the app on your phone and get an account . This took a little bit of time waiting for a verification email. There are a few steps of installing the batteries and having the lock pair which for me was cumbersome. It kept telling me it could see the lock and to move closer even though I was with in inches. Once everything was connected and paired the lock would operate , however a little bulky. My screen would indacate a jammed bolt , even though it opened. I also would get a message saying can't connect or move closer to unit , again being a few inches away. From outside the house I again have had mixed results. In my case I need to be right on the lock for it to work . There seems to be a lag time once you tell it to open until the lock actually opens. It does work ok by touching the lock. Another thing is you either need to keep the app open all the time which drains my phone pretty quick or open the app when you want to open a lock. This takes more time then trying to find a key to open the door along with waiting for it to see your lock. Maybe having a FOB might be a better choice but I don't know if you will need to have your phone with you to use it. I think this tec could be great I just don't think we are in prime time. Maybe with the bridge it works more seamlessly. Your unit comes with 2 ekeys , but in the app it says three. I can't find if you can have more than what it comes with for a price . Customer service is helpful my only questions were in regard to the bridge . I do love the ability to re key the lock with out bringing it to a lock smith , or having to replace the small pins yourself which is a pain. Overall quality of materials are on par, software and reliability are fair, having a the bridge is a must if you want all the functionality this product has to offer.

What is a BIG problem though, is being nickel and dimed for using the "e-keys" at $1.99 each for the extra ones. I have a large family and everyone's old enough for a smart phone. Having the company only allow 3 e-keys without paying more for each and every e-key over 3 is an insult to the customers who already shelled out over $200 for the lock. If the margins are really that close on this, they should charge a few more bucks and allow unlimited e-keys (or at least a reasonable number, say 25). I'd never have purchased it if I knew of this limitation beforehand. Kwikset needs to knock this off and refund the e-keys already purchased. And how about putting this on the box! You know, truth in advertising, for once.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Entering my house has never been easier The 2nd gen Kevo is released 3 years after the first. They have added some nice functionality and I am really liking the lock. First off, it looks nice. The front is an unassuming lock, the back has a solid look and feel. I like the fact that I can tap the lock 3 times on the way out the door to lock it, and even if I don't have my phone on me it will lock. Some of the marketing out there look the same for gen 1 & 2, however generation 2 does not include a fob. You do get 2 eKeys, and 24 hour guest keys are free. Additional and timed eKeys will cost you a nominal fee. (I may just buy a fob for folks I want to have access or give them a real key). It also has some nice security, as it won't activate if you have the phone/ekey behind the door. I did a number of tests just to make sure since I keep my phone in my master which is above and in front of the door. I can't find anything to complain about, or knock stars off for, so it is getting a full five stars. (Oh and the old fashioned key works great, and was easy to rekey to my houses keys with the included kwikset functionality)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Extremely frustrating product Purchased this along with the Fob accessory to help my mother in law have easier access to get in the house. Installation was pretty standard, but setting up the lock, extremely poor. The lights didnt work, only got my phone to sync up with lock after the 16th time resetting the lock, took almost 90 seconds each time for lock to register phone to prepare to unlock or lock door. Could not get the touch features to work, the fab would not sync and after waiting almost an hour on the phone for kwikset support and no answer i returned the lock and fob for the close to $280 spent and got a key pad lock which works much better and saved $180.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy install and looks great. The Kevo touch to open deadbolt is a very simple install. It took me about twenty minutes to remove my old deadbolt and install the Kevo deadbolt. I really appreciate the heavy duty striker plate that is included. I used 3 in. deck screws to install the striker. plate. I'm sure that they went through the door frame and most of the way through the 2x4 stud framing the door.. The door I installed the Kevo in is a steel entry door so I feel that everything is secure. The lock is easy to program and use. You only get 2 free passkeys that you can use on your cellphones. They only cost $1.99 each for extras, but it would be nice if a few more were included. The lockset is very nice looking. I will be getting another for my back door.

I installed the lock on the 28th Dec. 2016 and it worked fine for about 2 weeks. Then it intermittently would not lock to touch, and last week 1/19 was saying it had low batteries. Took apart the unit (VERY POOR DESIGN) to get to the batteries, lost one of the 3 tiny screws, and the batteries tested good. Put back together and operated in the morning, early, did NOT work in the middle of the day, and worked again at night. During midday the ring started flashing red two times and left a message of extreme battery failure.

Only some phone models are supported although the packaging says Android and IOs. It only comes with online directions although to don't need to be online to use it. It has worked pretty well so far but still leaves a lot to be desired. you can find similar locks that have more features. I enjoyed the convenience of this lock when I had a Galaxy S5. I then upgraded to the new LG V20 (same android system) and its not supported. I have also read similar complaints with the Google Pixel. I think if you make a lock for techies, be able to keep up with the technology.
