how do I remove the dor knob?

Asked by: dlf91
There is a set screw that holds the handle on the shaft, adjustable with an Allan wrench that comes with the door handle.

Is the inside handle always unlocked?

On the existing entry locks on my house, you can always turn the handle on the inside, even when the door is locked. Is this true for these levers? And when you use your key to open the door from the outside, does the lock stay locked, or become unlocked? Because my existing locks stay locked, and you can just close the door behind you when you get home.
Asked by: Greg
Kwikset Model # 405BL 15 SMT RCAL RCS is not a storeroom function. This model is an entry function lock that is keyed on the outside with a turn piece for locking and unlocking on the inside. The storeroom function lock is always locked on the outside unless opened with a key. When the door is closed, the lock automatically reverts back to a locked position. From inside the room, the door will open freely at all times to allow someone inside the room to exit. Currently the Balboa lever is not offered in a storeroom function. Please visit your local Home Depot special order desk to see what styles are available in the storeroom function.

Satin Nickel Entry Lever Featuring SmartKey is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks and performs well Easy installation, well made and updates entry doors to more pleasing style. Although this rating is for SmartKey product the products prefer and installed are not SmartKey. I prefer to have locks rekeyed where I purchased these products. I am happy with all the other door handles in this series, but the Smart Keyed Entry Lever that I received did not function properly. I switched the handle direction as I did with other handles I received, but the set screw oddly ceased functioning and I had to go purchase a standard keyed entry (same in every other way...Balboa Venitian Bronze) from the store to replace this one. I think I just got a bad one because everything else worked great!

I bought two - one worked fine, looks good, was relatively easy to install once you understood the process, but....the other was defective (the small hole necessary to reach a critical set screw was blocked, so I couldn't reverse the lock set for my door). So a 50% success ratio - not so great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value! I use the Balboa series as a standard lever for all our new construction homes. The low cost allows me to offer levers when other builders offer standard knobs. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Inferior quality I purchased this product to match the 20+ interior handles I had previously installed. One week later I went outside and when I tried to come back in the door wouldn't open. The lever moved but nothing happened. I ended up having to break a window to get in and found the door wouldn't open from the inside either. I took the inside knob off and while everything seemed fine the latch didn't move. I ended up taking the door off the hinges to get everything apart. Assuming this was just a freak occurrence I exchanged it for a new one. Low and behold 2 weeks later I tried to leave my house and the exact same thing happened. This time I was able to pry the latch in without removing the door and it's the exact same issue. I waited on hold for 20 minutes for customer support and they told me to send pictures! I am returning it and the dead bolt and buying a Schlage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from In the end, this has been a great purchase! Looks and works great. Reset the lock to use my original house key in one easy try. My door even closes a lot smoother than with my previous door handle. I had one issue that turned out to be my own fault so to speak. I'd never seen a set screw that you actually backed out in order to make it lock in place. In my opinion, the instructions that came in the box just didn't properly explain this one part of the install process. My instructions said to first loosen the screw from the interior handle lever. Well, my handle didn't have the set screw attached to it in any way. So I assumed it was missing and contacted Kwikset via their web site. They immediately sent me a new set screw. When I couldn't get it to thread into the lever, I contacted them again. I then received personal detailed instructions from their customer service rep who told me about how the set screw is already part of the 'post' and that it had to be backed out to then lock into the handle. Ah, now it all makes sense. FYI, the instructions I found on their web site seemed to explain and show it better [ref http://s7d5.scene7.com/is/content/BDHHI/40498-01]
