overall very good considering its only job is is hold logs. The ember retainer is starting to warp from the heat.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by LEDengineer Too small and lightweight
Much too small and lightweight for a standard fireplace. Only holds one medium size log. The Ember Retainer is not a good feature; embers should fall to the floor to create a nice hot pile to keep the fire going and allow air to reach the bottom of the pile of logs. The Ember Retainer clogs up with small embers and blocks air flow.
The end result is a smokey fire that's hard to start since there's no airflow.
This might be ok if you burn grocery store fire logs, or just occasionally burn pine. But if you burn hardwoods in a big fireplace, this is grate doesn't do the job.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Hare Grate won't last
This grate is okay but the heat will melt the ember retainer and the wrought iron will bend after prolonged use. This is my second one of this type and the first lasted only two seasons. It words fine if you don't mind replacing it every two years.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Luposian I am beyond pleased...
As far as reviewer "B1976" is concerned, I say his review is patently false and fabricated.
We bought this exact same grate, just today (12/10/09), and have been burning a fire since 8:15pm. It's now 1:40am (12/11/09) and the final log is almost finished. Even with vigorous billowing (stoking the fire), the grate and Ember Retainer are holding up fine.
The Ember Retainer is an awesome addition that makes sure that the only thing that falls through will be embers that turn to ash. No more black chunks of incompletely burned wood. Yea!
I decided I'd been gentle enough with this grate, after two hours of "easy stuff" (small branches, pieces of old fence, etc.) and started throwing on more logs (the stuff I'm using is from our Eucalyptus Tree (or a tree very similar), which burns HOT! I kept a close eye on the Ember Retainer and the grate all this time, to see any evidence of weakness or failure. I ran the fire til now (over 5 hours) and am only now letting it die down. No structural failure is noted. There may be the tiniest bit of Ember Retainer sagging, but I wont be able to be certain of that til morning. This grate has far exceeded even my wildest expectations.
I absolutely love this grate... it burns everything to fine ash, it produces a much more consistent radiant heat (very evident and consistent "blue fire" (which is hotter than yellow fire), which warms up our living room much farther from the fireplace than ever before. I'd say about 3-4 feet further away than before.
Our fireplace previously only heated about 3 feet out from the fireplace and the rest of the room was noticeably cool, like no fire was even going. Had to build up an inferno, to make the room even a few degrees warmer (according to our furnace thermostat), but that usually fell quickly and the furnace would kick on again.
If only other reviewers were as thorough and detailed as I'm being. Might make purchasing a grate lot easier for a potential customer... like I used to be.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Cartr Effective, but will burn through eventually
Second time around for me with this product, first one lasted two seasons before ember-catching grating burned through completely. At the end of the first season I had fooled it with some wire repair and got a second season from it. Expect the same with this. Pity, since the grate itself would probably last for many years. I'll replace the ember grating completely on my old one and have it ready before this one burns through, then start the cycle again.

Solid and well built. The "coal catcher" helps the fire to burn longer and more evenly. Great value for the price.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by jbird lasted about one season
We burn would pretty frequently during the colder months (4 months out of the year). This grate worked OK, but melted down in the center on Christmas day this year under the weight of a few logs, it had melted flat to the floor of the fireplace. I would imagine this would work OK for seldom user, but if you burn frequently, invest in a decent cast iron unit
