To determine if this LG 10,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner and Dehumidifier Function with Remote Control in White, Model # LP1014WNR would be good for the room you intend to have it installed in, you will need to know the rooms square footage and you will need the appropriate type of window to install the window venting kit in so that the unit can be vented to the outside. The 10,000 BTU that this unit is rated for will cool an Estimated cooling area of 300 sq. ft. (15 ft. x 20 ft.) The exhaust vent hose for this unit is 5 feet long and has to be kept as straight as possible so your window needs to be within reach and you will need at least a 20" clerance space around the unit for proper air flow...^IFV Read Less

Obviously my garage is not insulated on 1 wall and the garage door itself. Would this unit be acceptable for such a setting? I know it's not going to cool as well as it would indoors but in this Texas heat any relief would be welcome.

Based on your description of the room / garage, this would be a little like running an air conditioner outside. As long as you're in front of the unit with air blowing directly on you, you'll be cool. If you're trying to "lower or maintain" a temperature in the garage, the unit will likely run continuously and probably never reach it. 10,000 BTU will adequately cool an estimated area of 300 sq. ft. ( i.e a 15 ft. x 20 ft. room). The issue with placing the LG 10,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner and Dehumidifier Function with Remote Control in White, Model # LP1014WNR in a garage other than that you need the appropriate window to vent it through, is that temperatures in a garage can get exceedingly high to the point that the air conditioner could become ineffective. The window installation kit that comes supplied with this unit allows it to be installed in most Vertical-Sliding windows 18" to 50" in width or Casement-Style windows 18" to 50" in height. The exhaust vent hose is 5 feet long, but because it is built to the product's specifications, it cannot be lengthened, modified or replaced with a longer hose as that would lead to a reduced cooling performance and the unit would overheat and either malfunction or burn itself out. Air conditioners are basically heat exchange units. They perform best when the external temperatures are not too high because the condenser gets rid of the heat within by transferring it to the cooler air outside. If the temperature outside gets to hot, that heat transfer cannot take place and the unit cannot get rid of the hot air...^IFV Read Less

Answer:
You can expect to see a jump in your bill, but truly depends on your useage and your area. In GA it added 40-50/mo. Window units are more efficient than the portable units for the long term if you're planning to use for extended periods. I use my portable now to cool a bedroom that gets more sun than others, so I don't have to over-cool other areas with the house system.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good air conditioner - loud though This is a nice air conditioner. I purchased it for my bedroom, where I did not want a window AC. I insulated the exhaust vent and wrapped it in black material so it isn't obvious. Pros: This unit has a nice looking design, is compact, easy to install, efficient, I live in Colorado so we it's mostly dry heat and I don't have to empty the water out of this unit often. We have another brand AC in another area of the house we have to drain daily. Easy to program. I like that it has a remote. Cons: The fan is very loud and the low speed is not much different than the high speed. This may be a con for some.. it makes a noise when you turn it on, off and change any setting. Doesn't come with a drain tube. You're expected to purchase one yourself. July 24, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Enough I bought this portable air conditioner because my apartment complex doesn't allow outside-the-window air conditioners. I felt the price was very reasonable. The way that my apartment is designed, I had to install the AC in the kitchen window to cool down my living room. This wasn't a problem with the venting hose provided and I liked that I could wheel the AC to face my living room. (My con with the venting hose is that it pops out of the diffuser too easily, so I had to tape it together). The rest of the installation went smoothly. This AC cools down the room quickly, but it is a bit loud. June 30, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not as great as expected... Does NOT cool room below 80 degrees in the middle of summer in NY. We bought 2 units in 2 different sizes, a large for the living room and small one for the bedroom for our small apartment. Both units worked GREAT in the month of May, when the outside temperature was 80, they were able to cool the room to 73. That was the absolute coldest temperature it will ever get in the room. Now that its 95 every day, forget about feeling cool and the loud noise takes a lot of getting used to. Its too bad because these were SO easy to install. Hopefully Home Depot still takes these back for refunds. July 25, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Keeping me cool The LG portable air conditioner I purchased was very easy to install. It's noisy, but I got used to it. The only downside is that while the description indicates it is self-evaporator, it isn't. Depending how much you use it, the drain pan has to be emptied. The problem with this is that the drain plug is at the very bottom of the a/c and there is very little room to get a pan or bowl under it to drain the water. I solved this by putting the a/c on a 6" box. Now it's easily drained August 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by not portable this product is not portable as described. it must vent from a window which makes it unable to move from room to room. I will be returning it. April 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect for vertical sliding windows ! This LG unit is doing a terrific job cooling the living room/ kitchen area. The window hose mount was perfect for our windows and I would say almost any window. Very happy to have purchased this unit before all the 90 degrees days. We picked the LG unit because my son has the same one working well for a number of years. Emptying the water tray is not easy but I would guess this is the same with all portables. The Home Depot employees were very helpful. August 2, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Too Loud I thought this unit would be perfect for my bedroom, I had always wanted a floor unit instead of the window units, the set up was really easy to understand and easy to install. The problems with it are #1 it sounds like a plain taking off....#2 There is not much difference between the 'High' and 'Low' with the noise and air flow seem to be the same,#3 The drain is placed too low and I had to put it on a platform and unhook the air vent to drain. Maybe in a larger room it might be ok, but not for a bedroom unit. It is almost so loud that I really feel it would cause hearing loss used for a long period of time. I know the return policy for Home Depot and may have to return the unit, maybe go for another window unit, I just dont know what to do at this point. #4 it does not seem to cool enough and still seems warm in the small room its in. At this point I may have to invest in a European style unit as we do not have a Venting system in this old house. August 6, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by On its 3rd year We're on our 3rd year with this unit and use it every summer. It does work really well for our large living room. Only complaints are the loud noise requires us to turn the tv really loud (but all ac's are loud I guess) and the vent hose radiates quite a bit of heat (we throw a towel over the hose to better insulate it). Today the water sensor stopped letting me know when it is full so the unit started spitting out mist with the cool air, but seems to be working fine now after draining it.. July 24, 2016
