Answer:
It has to be vented to the outside in some fashion. If not through a window, then by some other means. A hole in the wall would work just fine. But to function, it HAS to vent outside. Or, worst case scenario, into your attic, but I would not recommend that.

Answer:
It may be vented to attic, or out through floor - or whatever - but it MUST be vented. If it is not, then you are just sending the hot air removed from the environment, and negating the cooling effect of the unit. I have an upstairs apt, with access on floor level to the attic, so will be custom building a door that allows to vent into attic space, so I can keep my window area clear.

Answer:
Yes it does have to be vented through a window. A five foot long exhaust hose attaches to rear of air conditioner on one end. The other end of the exhaust hose attaches to a plastic panel that fits in your window, exactly the same way as a window fan sits in the window. Attached photos are of a different model, but the connections are identical for both units.

If you do not vent it you would just return the hot moist air into the room and it would never cool down, just waste your money. If your unit removes a lot of moisture and turns off often then you might check to see if there is a floor drain (some rooms and all basements have them) and use a hose to drain the holding tank directly into the drain via the screw-on cap. If that is not an option for you then you might consider creating a larger holding tank for the excess by something like a small container or pail, etc.. The idea being you could empty this as needed. Just remember if you go on vacation to make sure the A/C unit is OFF. I hope this helps. Read Less

It is difficult to drain as unless you have the right size pan to put under the spout, the water goes everywhere. It doesn't show the correct temperature even though I've reset it several times to 68 (it still shows 73-75). Piece of junk in my opinion and don't waste your money. Read Less

AS per the owners manual, this unit has a self evaporative function. This means the water is recirculated and then exhausted out the window hose.
If the unit does accumulate water in high humidity environments, you can drain the water simply from a plug in the back of the unit. If this manual drainage is needed, the unit will shut off and flash an indicator on the digital display.

IF you are looking ONLY for dehumidifier function - this will not be the way to go. Buy an actual dehumidifier. A good dehumidifier will gather about a gallon of water every 1-3 hours, based on environment, and settings on the unit - etc. I have a dehumidifier as well. On dry days...it will run all day without filling the reservoir. On wet days....it gets there in about 5 hours.
Hope that helps. Read Less

I have not drained any water from the bottom plug yet and no, it doesn't leak water. I would expect that because the unit holds 72 pints of water before it needs draining, that unless you are using your dehumidifier on a regular basis, you might be able to go for quite some time before needing to drain the unit.
I have only had my unit for 15 days.

If you live in a moderately humid summer climate like Minnesota, you will more than likely need to empty it at least daily. Since LG didn't have a way to connect a hose to the coarse thread nipple in the bottom of the unit, I returned it and bought another brand. I will say that the LG unit did a good job cooling.

While it should, you'll have to turn the kit sideways to make it work. You may also have to add some additional material to seal it up tight. You can cut a piece of plywood around it, and then use duct tape to join them together.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Just be warned: very loud I recommend if you're going to get this unit to find a display or ask to test the floor model to listen to it. I wanna believe I got a bad apple before I returned it, because its low and high fan speed setting were equal in loudness and air output. It's LOUD. I can vouch that Home Depot offers quieter models like Honeywell. But don't only take my word. Bear in mind I don't expect whisper quiet so when I say it's loud...it's loud. I'm recommending this unit only for use outside of the bedroom and living room where you'd wanna hear yourself think. March 17, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very Good purchase Only drawback is the plastic vent for window, a little flimsy... Only had it a month but Cools well so far. May 26, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by I normally am impressed by LG Got this product because I am a big fan of LG products, but must say I am very disappointed in this 10k BTU portable air conditioner. First off it is very very loud for a 300 SqFt room. Second had a buddy test the BTU's it as actually putting out on full setting and it was averaging around 6.500 BTU, this could be a flaw in the one I have but nevertheless it should have been tested. This unit struggled to keep my little 100 Sq ft room 70 degrees. Also the temp gauge on mined was wildly off when it was not running, 3-5 degrees off the actual room temp. I did insulate the flexible duct and the window so it would not produce as much heat. August 27, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Enjoying a cooler house! We live in Western Washington State, where very few houses have air conditioning... it's rarely needed, but this summer has been much warmer than in the past! We purchased our LG portable air conditioning unit on the spur of the moment and have been thoroughly enjoying a much cooler living space with it. The unit was easy to install, and came with everything needed. When on, it cools the air in our open-concept living/dining/kitchen area quickly and efficiently. We are pleased with its' portability and how easy it will be to pack it up to store for the cooler months. The only complaint we have with the unit is that the fan is very noisy. August 12, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Amazing portable air conditioner I bought this to use in a hot bedroom I was painting in August. It kept me very cool as I worked. I am looking forward to using it next summer. November 26, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The air conditioner was easy to install, works very well is pleasant to look at. One of the reasons we wanted a portable air conditioner was so we could pull all parts inside the house and close and lock the windows whenever we want to which lessens the possibility of illegal entry when we are not home.. Also, from outside the house the small opening flush with the window looks much nicer than a square box air conditioner hanging out the window. Lastly, we could use it in another room if we need or want to and it would be quite easy to move. This air conditioner gives a lot more options for the direction of the air flow than the window one would. As well as adjusting the louvres you can turn the whole unit. The wheels work well even on carpet. The noise level is what I would expect, but not objectionable. We just have to turn the TV up a little louder. May 14, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not for humid basement or conditions Fair price. Cools about 250 sq ft well enough. It's loud. You can't shift air flow left to right, only up and down. This unit is not for basements or other humid conditions. I was very excited about the evaporation system and not having to empty pans or try to figure out how to get run-off water to drain UP to a sink or window. Then after more than an hour of figuring out how to vent it out through a basement casement window...I woke up the next morning to a saturated carpet in front of the unit...the water that doesn't evaporate gets sprayed out the front with the cool air. Now will have to run dehumidifier half the time to remove enough moisture from the air then run the AC the other half the time to cool off the room. NOT what I was expecting. June 3, 2013
