Answer:
I would not install this horizontally at all. Why? Because the grooves are routed i.e cut into the wood panel and this area is exposed more than the main treated surface. Yes the grooves are treated but not like the main surface. If you mount it horizontally, water will collect inside each groove and wait to be absorbed or begin mold growth.

I have a 14' x 32' HD mini barn that I used this sheeting as a 2'skirt around the bottom. On the porch I ran it horizontally with great success. It is much more stout as well as a cheaper and better looking substitute for the cheesy vinyl alternatives.

While the manufacturer's instructions specifically state that the product must be installed vertically, there are numerous photographs on their website which show the product installed horizontally. I've also seen this product installed horizontally in many cases, but if you do so you may be voiding your warranty coverage. The T&G edge of the board is not able to support weight and maintain its alignment, so if you do install this product horizontally you must make other accommodations at any joints to support the load without stressing the joint. I don't see why not, but be sure to install so that the overlap is placed on the downward side (as to not let water run in).

Yes, they must be painted. One advantage of these is that they are pre-primed, so you only have to paint them.

Definitely not. It is a shiplap. There is an alignment bead you are supposed to use as a guide to set the next sheet on. See the PDF:

This is exterior siding, designed to be weather and rot resistant. It looks like 8" on center T1-11 siding and has a 50 year warranty. Can it be used inside? I dont know why not. It has no smell, so I cant imagine off gasing would be any issue. It is pre-primed, so you can paint it any color you like (it sucks up paint easily).

That said, I think if you go to the LP Products website and look up Series 38 paneling, it will show that it is for residential exterior use (that's what it was designed for) and will not mention interior applications, but you could call the company (I did with my questions).
By the way, the Home depot website reads like this product is for sheds and dog houses. Not sure who wrote their "copy" for this item, but it does not jibe with the manufacturers brochures, which describes it as for use as residential exterior siding. We have installed it on our 2 story chimney, on our front bay and on a shed and we were really happy with the product. Read Less

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 48 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by I don't know why there are any good reviews on this product! I used this Smartsiding 8 years ago, and it did pretty well! I used it again less than a year ago and the quality has dropped like a stone!!! The glue they use now is not even close to as good as it was, and the wood is not pressed as compact as it was. The 'nailing overlaps' are too thin too hold if there is any shifting, and it will pull the nail holes and split your calking! You absolutely must check every seam every year for years to come, and re-nail, re-calk, and spot re-paint. This is the HIGHEST maintenance siding available! They sell a thicker non-primed smart stile siding that is 5/8 thick for a couple extra bucks each at Home Depot that I will buy next time. Specially when the behr premium paint is now paint and primer in one. So, it does not matter that the better thicker, and slightly more expensive siding is not primed. DON'T WAIST YOUR MONEY ON THIS JUNK!!! August 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by very good product, and easy to work with. Very good product, as easy to work with as OSB. Has very nice texture and takes paint easily. August 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worked great. Very happy. I built a two story work shop and was very happy with this product. I was surprised that they stopped making the end trim pieces in various sizes. I think they only carry one size trim piece now. It said it was made in the USA! This was easy to paint and install. Look perfect. May 25, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product I use this product for my barn quilts. Easy to use. Easy to paint. Durable for my project. April 1, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent product! We used this to close in the sides on a metal carport and it worked perfectly and painted up really nicely! We did put caulking in the seams to ensure a tight fit. It cut easily with a regular blade in our circular saw and we did apply two coats of paint which dried very quickly. We would definitely recommend and/or use this again for any project as we've been very pleased with it. July 4, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good for the money. I bought six sheets of this product to re-side the south side of a 35 year old garage that is sided with the same type of product. For new construction I would use something better but for this type of repair this works well. I put 1"x4" batts on the seams because I had to renail the old siding about 10 years ago and I used batts then. Just be careful with the corners, nail it well, and use a good paint and it should last a long time. August 1, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy Installation and Holds Paint Very Well It installs easily and holds paint well. I have used this product twice now and both times very satisfied. July 10, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fast n' easy install!! Put an addition on the back of my small house with this product about a year and a half ago. Still looks new. Went up fast and easy and I've never done siding before. Will buy again for my next project! January 2, 2014
