Fabric and weeds

I have small weeds sprouting in new soil. Can I place this fabric barrier over without removing these weeds? Will they die under the fabric? I will be placing mulch over when the planting is finished.

Is this material spun or woven? Can this material be sewn to make garden grow bags?

Asked by: gmibm
It appears to be woven and is heavy enough that I would certainly give it a try. I'll have some left over, maybe I will.

It is much sturdier than other landscape fabric that I've used; I'm using it for a french drain and dry stream and feel confident it will last much longer than the less sturdy ones I've seen and used.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ground Cover Fabric Fabric was easy to work with; cut cleanly with scissors / blade; the inside, 1st 18" was damaged but I sure that is from the processing-still useable; nice thickness; only problem I had was internet specs stated it "came with hardware" & it did not; phone call to inquire about this hardware got no results or answer; will be needing more & will buy same fabric;

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best out there. I have used the cheaper plastic type and it is really a waste. The good ol fabric underlayment is just a better value. Heavy weight, lays out easier. It is very durable and holds up for years over the propylene stuff.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product. Good product. Easy to put down. It would have been perfect if it came with the weed cloth stakes. A little bit expensive but seems to be worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Holds up well over time but does tear easily This material is not cheap but holds up well over time - I've even used it as a flooring material on the floor of my greenhouse (to avoid bare ground) and although it can be torn easily if not staked down well it holds up amazingly well (years) otherwise. It will let some sunlight penetrate so if you use it as weedblock you must cover it with mulch, gravel etc. or grass & weeds will continue to grow underneath it pushing it upward. Lets rain / water pass through to the soil very easily which is one of my favorite characteristics.
