HI RM, It has been quite a long time since I received this product and have used most of it. We laid it in our front walkway, yard and under a rock bed. From what I remember, it was not treated with anything. It is made of a strong material but allows water to pass through. We live in a rainforest, so this is very important.

Can you walk on it?

I need to apply this over pathways that were once covered in several inches of 3/4 minus gravel. Those paths are now filled with weeds and the gravel is embedded in the soil. I've tried covering paths with various types of weed barrier, and then topping with bark mulch. But either the gravel below and/or the mulch on top tears the weed barrier when I walk on it. So the weeds just grow through the little holes. Is this tough enough, or do I need to resort to roofing shingles? (They do work!)

Hi hengwen from Ashland, Oregon.
Thank you for your great question. Weed mat is designed to cover a sand or dirt area prior to the application of 3-4 inches of mulch, ground cover bark, pea gravel or under the 1 inch of finishing sand when pavers are to be laid down.
To finish your project properly, you will need to kill off the weeds that are there and then add about 2 inches of finishing sand. Place the weed mat over the smooth sand base and then add the 3-4 inches of mulch, ground cover bark or pea gravel. The Ground Cover Bark will provide a denser layer since it is made up of smaller pieces of bark.

I would also use a granular pre-emergence sprinkled over the top of the mulch or pea gravel. The pre-emergence will inhibit the germination of the weed seeds for up to 3 months.
This process will need to be repeated to keep the weed seeds at bay. You might also consider using Durazone by Bayer. This is a non-selective herbicide that also contains a pre-emergence that has an effective deterrent of sprouting weed seeds for up to 6 months.

Unless you pour concrete on your pathway, the battle with the intrusion of weeds will be constant, especially if you are receiving regular rain.
I hope this will give you a few ideas to make your project complete. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 26 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exactly what I needed Bought this to put under landscape rocks on a hill to prevent the dirt from moving and weeds from growing. A little tricky putting down on a slope with the wind blowing but once it was down it worked great. Won't have to worry about weeds and water can penetrate but not flow very easily. July 5, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Weed Block This grey version works better than the black stuff, but I did double up in some areas. March 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect It is easy to work with. Seems like a great quality. I use for for the area that required good drainage. Price is a litle high but overal satisfiied. February 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by thin, but strong, color blends I have high hopes for this fabric. This one feels like actual cloth, no holes. Very rip resistant, I can't pull it apart with two hands, although it starts to stretch. Almost seems like the stuff inside fiberglass to me. The light gray color will be much less visible than the ugly black. High hopes, I will update in a year after it's been under river rock, see if it tears or breaks down. Very thin, can easily see through it, and obviously water permeable. I might hesitate to use this for retaining wall gravel filter, but french drain maybe... I've previously used woven plastic landscape fabric... the black one with the green lines towards then end. They tend to break and unravel, and weeds got through that one within a year. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by So Far, So Good Bought this product after mulching wasn't enough to keep weeds out. One roll covers quite a bit of area and it was relatively easy to install. Just cut areas for your plants to pop out and cover with at least 3-4in of mulch which gives extra help to the fabric to block out the sunlight (as well as hide the fabric.) So far, I found no problems with this product. October 22, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy To Do The landscape fabric was easy to lay down. I just measured the length, cut with scissors, and laid it on the ground with holes for the existing plants. Held it down with blocks of wood until I got the wood chips (they recommend bark) spread on top of it. If I want to add more plants, it's just scooping the wood chips away and making a cut big enough to put the new plant in. It may look thin, but it is tough stuff. April 30, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Weeds punched through it Two months after installing landscape fabric as a weed barrier I was surprised to see grass sprouting from under the rocks and mulch I placed over this product. Grass poked straight through the fabric. It is not effective as a weed barrier. July 4, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by No more weeds.... Best product to stop weeds!!! Easy to install. No more weeds.... July 16, 2015
