Answer:
You have to carry the container to the sink, fill it and stick it back in. The entire unit weighs too much to pick up, even when completely empty. It's also too large to fit into a sink to fill.

During a dry time of year (the heating season for us) you could easily go though several gallons of water per day. It's important to have "good" water. The fan and the recirculating pump are small, and do not run all the time. so the electricity costs are minimal. I presume that the main costs are the water to go into the unit and a gallon of vinegar to clean it at the end of the season. Read Less

Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 158 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Large unit It is loud when it kicks on, but you get used to it. Does not run constantly only when humidity drops according to its gauge. Easy to fill, only need to fill every couple of days. No cool steam comes out so area is not wet. August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love it I've had this for several months. It works great. I have washed the filter rather than replacing it, and that has worked well, even in our very hard water area. It is now at the point where I have to replace the filter, but I've washed it about 6 times. July 13, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Seems Good So Far The capacity and the auto humidistat are definitely a plus. The only complaint that I have is that it doesn't auto turn off when it's empty. As far as quality goes, they seem pretty solid. The only thing I noticed is that the brand tag started to peel off both of them almost immediately. It's nice to have the casters because otherwise it would be quite heavy to carry when full. April 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very good large humidifier This is a very good humidifier, somewhat unique with its reservoir size and re circulation while the unit is running. I bought this one to replace one that served me well for about 6 or 7 years - it's pretty durable. There aren't too many humidifiers on the market with the water capacity / high output that this unit has. The only negatives are that it's a bit noisy on the higher fan speeds but it's not an issue since it's so effective that I only run it at the low speed. The filler opening could be much larger on the reservoir: I usually fill it in the bathtub since that's the easiest / quickest way to fill it. On my old one I would unscrew the cover on the reservoir to fill it which worked fine but once or twice I didn't have it threaded on properly which made a mess . . . If you keep it clean; use the scale / algae additives and change the filter at least once a year it should serve you well. February 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Humidifier One of the best humidifiers I have ever purchased. Easy to use and fill. March 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Humidifier I like this humidifier as it pumps the water to the top of the filter and keeps it wet from top to bottom. With the other humidifiers I've owned, the filters had to soak the water manually, and the filter would quit working a lot sooner. The only think I don't like about this humidifier is that it's a little too noisy, even on low, but I can put up with that since it works better. January 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Humidifier Works great low mainainence. A little expensive but worth every penny! February 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works as described Over 10 years ago, we were buying replacement filters (wicks) for this model. When our initial humidifier died, we bought another one just like it. The fan does make some noise, but generally the humidifier is able to support our entire house, and of course it doesn't run all the time. February 10, 2016
