A year ago I used some asphalt crack filler but even after a couple of applications it still left a depression. After this winter, here in Metro Detroit, the cracks reappeared all over again. I am looking for a crack filler which overcomes both those problems. Would it help to put sand in first before applying the crack filler?

Answer:
Larger cracks will require asphalt patch that can be applied with a trowel. When applying the blacktop crack filler using a trowel will help to force the filler into the cracks. Multiple layers applied has helped to build up the area and keep the water, snow, ice, and chemical treatments out. Colder weather will probably mean yearly checks and further patch work.

Answer:
I don't think loose sand will make it more stable. The same company makes a Trowel Patch that I use first in larger cracks/deeper cracks. The crack filler is then used to fine tune the job. The trowel patch has a grit mixed in already. I also generally over fill my cracks and then take a plastic putty knife to smooth it like I was spackling.

Same issue hear in Denver and end up having to spend money every year. I use the large buckets of sealer which seems to help, but the depressions haven't completely gone away and again, repeat yearly.

Answer:
This stuff seemed to seal really well, but the winter is yet to come. There is a slight depression - I only used 1 application, and smoothed it with a flat wooden trowel after application. I don't find the depression objectionable, so I didn't try a second coat.

Answer:
The fact that the crack filler continued to settle indicates there was undermining of the product. Often the sub-base erodes below the asphalt causing the crack filler to settle. Yes, sand can be added to the crack prior to filling to prevent settlement and to fill the void below the asphalt. The crack filler will preform better if completely filled, as there is more surface area for it to bond to. Read More

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Cracks flilled easily My drive way is fairly new and this year is the first time that several cracks formed, they were less than1/4 in wide and about five feet long. I used a putty knife to force the filler in, it dried quickly. Hopefully it will make it through the Maine winter. October 4, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by BLACK TOP CRACK FILLER BLACK TOP CRACK FILLER IS EASY TO APPLY AND VERY EFFECTIVE IN SEALING CRACKS -ALSO LOOK GOOD October 4, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Driveway Crack Filler The crack filler does what I expected. Fills cracks up to about 1/2 inch. If the crack is deep, you need to fill the crack with sand or gravel. Expect some shrinkage as it dries. September 27, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by RM Good product been using it for years, coverage varies on new or old driveways September 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent for driveway cracks I have an older asphalt driveway that needs the cracks filled every year. It is a liquid so it is easy to pour out of the bottle into cracks. It doesn't last for more than a year because of traffic, but it's better than doing nothing. September 14, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The best Works well fill and stays there. No complains hope the price was better. September 8, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by it works but quality is inconsistent bought 2 one gallon, and 1 one qt. containers of this product. 1 one gallon container was so full that it could not be shaken. product was like black tar .toke forever to get the product out. also had to cut container in half to get all of the product out. the second 1 gallon container was easy to shake and was almost like pouring water. the 1 qt. container was easy to shake, but was thicker than the second 1 gallon container.
