A year ago I used some asphalt crack filler but even after a couple of applications it still left a depression. After this winter, here in Metro Detroit, the cracks reappeared all over again. I am looking for a crack filler which overcomes both those problems. Would it help to put sand in first before applying the crack filler?

Answer:
Larger cracks will require asphalt patch that can be applied with a trowel. When applying the blacktop crack filler using a trowel will help to force the filler into the cracks. Multiple layers applied has helped to build up the area and keep the water, snow, ice, and chemical treatments out. Colder weather will probably mean yearly checks and further patch work.

Answer:
I don't think loose sand will make it more stable. The same company makes a Trowel Patch that I use first in larger cracks/deeper cracks. The crack filler is then used to fine tune the job. The trowel patch has a grit mixed in already. I also generally over fill my cracks and then take a plastic putty knife to smooth it like I was spackling.

Same issue hear in Denver and end up having to spend money every year. I use the large buckets of sealer which seems to help, but the depressions haven't completely gone away and again, repeat yearly.

Answer:
This stuff seemed to seal really well, but the winter is yet to come. There is a slight depression - I only used 1 application, and smoothed it with a flat wooden trowel after application. I don't find the depression objectionable, so I didn't try a second coat.

Answer:
The fact that the crack filler continued to settle indicates there was undermining of the product. Often the sub-base erodes below the asphalt causing the crack filler to settle. Yes, sand can be added to the crack prior to filling to prevent settlement and to fill the void below the asphalt. The crack filler will preform better if completely filled, as there is more surface area for it to bond to. Read More

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good sealer Did the job as expected. Will purchase again if needed. June 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just Right Material I used this material for sealing the joint between my concrete driveway and foundation and it made the perfect seal. Before applying the seal material, I used backer rod to fill the bottom of the joint and then applied the seal. Would suggest using masking tape on the driveway side of the joint to prevent seal material staining the concrete and removing tape after drying. Seal looks smooth and professional when dry.
