Product Overview

(Note: If product is not available to order in your area that is due to nighttime temperatures. Product may not cure and/or track in late Fall and early Spring applications). 1-Pallet (36-Pails) of Latex-ite 4.75 Gal. Ultra Shield Driveway Filler Sealer is an asphalt emulsion based driveway filler/sealer for blacktop. Ultra Shield is an advanced EZ-Gel formula that has an enhanced rubberized system for maximum durability and color retention. Our Driveway Sealer Pallet is a great way to order for larger jobs. Helpful Hints before you seal your driveway: 1. Flip pails over night prior to doing job (it will be much easier to mix in the morning and will ensure consistency during application). 2. Do the project all at one time without starting and stopping. 3. Check the weather and make sure no rain is forecast and it is at least 55°F at night (a cold driveway will not allow the sealer to cure properly). 4. Check latexite.com for further tips and How To Videos.

Answer:
I don't know why anyone would buy 36 pails or why the price is higher but if you need 36 of them, buy the pallet and have them ring them as 36 separate items.

The simple answer is, "It depends." What does it depend upon?... many factors.

The simple answer is, "It depends." What does it depend upon?... many factors.
1) How new is the black top? If it is very new (<1 year), it probably still has petroleum distillates near the surface and a water based paint would not be best. An oil based paint or one specifically formulated for black top would be best for new black top.
2) If it is >12 months old, has it ever been sealed. If so, with what type of sealer. Again, this is due to whether or not the painting surface of the blacktop is able to take oil based or water based paints. If recently sealed with a coal/tar sealer, an oil based paint or one specifically formulated for black top would be best for new black top. If it has not been sealed or was last sealed with a latex acrylic (water base) driveway sealer, then a latex acrylic paint can be used on the black top.
3) Make sure the black top is clean and any oil spots are cleaned/removed. This should be self explanatory but one should use either a commercial prep to clean up oil spots or a pressure washer with detergent to eliminate oil stains so that the pain can adhere.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 64 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Performance Highly Reliant on the Manufacturer's Instructions!... This is by far not a perfect product, but it is good overall. How it performs is really in the fine details of application. I learned the hard way on a few items and share them below. APPLICATION: This product is acrylic latex. Simplistically, it is water-based black paint with filler. if you have used a coal/tar product in the past, this goes down thinner and is easier to spread with a squeegee. Like with painting, you want to keep a wet edge so only work on a small section at a time (I did strips of 3' x 20'). Also, as others have suggested, I worked the squeegee both ways and on both axis (left/right and top/down) applying firm pressure to get good coverage but with a thin coat. Since it is thinner, I found it easier to keep a straight edge on the sides using the squeegee. I furthermore used duct tape to mask my Belgium black boarders which work quite nicely. Since it is acrylic latex, once dried, it will not be as easily affected by petroleum products leaking on it (such as gasoline or oil). COVERAGE: Regarding many of the reviews about coverage, I too had problems with the claimed coverage. I had a new (14 month old) unsealed driveway totaling a little under 1,200 sq. ft. According to the application directions, new driveway coverage is supposed to be 300-400 sq. ft. per pail. I followed what others suggested in buying an extra pail so I (initially) purchased 5 pails... It wasn't enough to cover the driveway! I ended up going back to Home Depot and purchased additional pails. Ultimately, my 14 month old unsealed driveway used 6-1/2 pails for a coverage rate of less than 185 sq. ft. DRYING TIME: Since it is water-based, it can dry fairly quickly… AS LONG AS THE TEMPERATURE REMAINS ABOVE AT LEAST 55⁰ F AT ALL TIMES (as the directions state). Because it is low in VOC’s (volatile organic compounds), the water in the product must evaporate to allow it to dry and cure. How do I know? Because I had a *major* problem with it drying. I applied it in mid-September. It was completely sunny for three days with the temperature in the mid 70’s each day (but night time temperatures were around 50⁰ F. The majority of my driveway receives sun and dried/cured according to the directions. However, the portion of my driveway that was shaded by my house did not dry, even after 48 hours – it was actually still *wet*! On the fourth day the weather forecast was for a chance of showers. I could not chance un-dried black paint to run all over my boarder pavers so I resorted to speeding up the drying period. I resorted to bringing out my two propane patio space heaters and ran them non-stop for 8 hours to dry the portion of my driveway that was shaded. At the end (56 hours after application and 8 hours with the patio heaters), it was dry to the touch but not *cured*. The light rain we had the following day did not make the sealer run (thank goodness!). Do not apply this product if temperatures will be below 55⁰ F as the instructions state and be very vary about the weather. If it rains before the product dries, you will have a huge mess! DURABILITY: While this product has a 10-year warranty, if you read the fine details it requires the product to be applied WITH *TWO* COATS AND WITHIN A *48-HOUR* PERIOD. My experience is that most people only apply *one* coat of sealer when doing their driveways so I don’t really know how durable this product will be with only one coat. Certainly, it will not be guaranteed by the manufacturer since I could only apply one coat because of the temperature and subsequent slow drying. Only time will tell how durable this product actually is. October 18, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Seems good, coverage lacking Purchased this premium product based on associate experience. Covers OK, although I needed 5 pails for less than 1200 sq. ft. Will comment after the winter regarding longevity. The result do look quite good. The semi-rough, non-shiny look is better than the commercial sealers we paid for in the past. My neighbor used a different product, it will be interesting to see which one remains intact longer. October 11, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by FIRST TIME USING THIS TYPE PRODUCT...USED A 3/8 NAP (smooth) ROLLER TO APPLY PRODUCT... DID NOT LIKE THE RECOMMENDED SQUEEGE METHOD.... RESULTS WERE OUTSTANDING... GREAT PRODUCT,WILL USE AGAIN IN 2 YRS. October 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Driveway Sealer Work fine on my driveway. Spread easily and went on fine. This is the best I have bought worth the extra money. October 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by If it Lasts Even 5 Years I will be Happy Been laying down different brands of driveway sealer for about 15 years and this was the easiest. It took 16 buckets to do my 4000 square foot driveway = 250/bucket and it looks great. Most sealers last less than half their rated time, so I am hoping this 10 year stuff lasts 5 and I will be happy. I got it on sale + 10% military discount so it was a great deal. September 22, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by I liked the outcome! I found this product very easy to mix and I did this by hand. Even though a neighbor suggested I use a drill stirrer. I did turn each bucket upside down a couple nights before. I did use this product when it was quite hot which caused the product to dry a little to fast for me and I left some lines in driveway when I tried to rework the product I guess you could lightly wet the product with water to slow dry time which I wished I'd tried. Unfortunately, I didn't re read this suggestion and wasn't ready for this. I spent a considerable amount of time on my driveway, rebuilding areas (edges and corners) which had been blown out by a truck delivering about 7 yards of dirt a few years ago. I sealed all the cracks and there a lot of cracks! Maybe I should of just replaced the driveway but after pounding in about 5, 50# bags of patch and 2 coats of this product I figured I may get a few more years out of it. Luckily, I just retired, so I have the time, even though I did hurt for a few days until I got use to pounding blacktop. I pounded and pounded and re-pounded and then pounded a little more and then pounded again. I started out using a tamper but found using a couple of hammers I could pound longer and pounded some more. I can't wait to see how long this product lasts and how well it will stand up to this coming winter. only time will really tell. If this product exists in a couple of years, I will add another coat of this product! October 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 4.75 Gal. Ultra Shield Driveway Filler Sealer The sealer was extremely easy to spread out and covered small cracks very well. The finish came out beautiful, making it look like pretty much a new driveway. The product says that it will last for 10 years. I am hoping that this is fact. If this turns out to be true, then it was well worth the higher price of the product. October 4, 2016
