Questions & Answers

Can this be used full time in a tiny home?

Could a couple use this full time in a tiny home? More specifically, can you extend the cartridge life by adding peat moss or saw dust scoops to urine like a regular composting toilet. Could we save the flushes for #2?
Asked by: SaveOnBags
Yes it could but would need to consider cost of liners.

How long can you leave used bags unattended in the toilet?

If I had this for a small cabin and only used it a couple of times on sporadic weekends, can it sit months?
Asked by: mike
Use a small amount of cat litter with each flush to make a better seal so you don't have to change often. Love this toilet!

Although variable with each user, how much - ballpark - does it weigh when being thrown away?

Trying to figure out if I could lift it and throw it away easily or if it would be too heavy after 15 or so flushes. I know the weight is variable with each user, but just trying to get an idea how "liftable" it is for an older lady. Thanks.
Asked by: HomesickGypsy
I am not good at guessing weights, but maybe 10 pounds... really don't know. Approx. 15 bathroom visits plus 15 pours of 1/4 to 1/2 cups of clumping cat litter. (Depends on individual). When you lift it out it is clean and it's coiled like a snake so you lift out the plastic bag that holds the foil-like snake. I am not a strong person and I can handle it easily.

I'm adding a review to help fellow consumers...I would NOT repurchase this toilet even though it seemed like a perfect solution. We are renovating a vintage Airstream and liked the idea of not dealing with a black tank, especially for boondocking. However....like MANY other reviewers, we've had continuous issues with urine seeping back through the twisted bags. We've tried throwing in paper towels or extra tp to soak it up with limited and mixed results. If the trailer gets warm and there is waste sitting in the toilet, you have odor. Plus it's kind of gross. Other negatives-refills are expensive and hard to get. Must plan ahead and have plenty on hand for trips. Also-you have to keep a mental count of how many "flushes" you've used on a refill. If it runs out in the middle of the night you can be stuck without a toilet, unless you go to the trouble (and noise) of switching the cartridge. We are still using our Laveo until we can figure out a black tank option. I really liked this concept and am disappointed in the actual function.

I really really wanted to love this product and I did when we first purchased it. We bought it for a summer cottage that it not plumbed for a toilet but have access to facilities very close by. Unfortunately, it does not work as well as advertised. Sometimes I have had to "flush" up to 4 times to get all the urine to be contained. At first, we had decided to use only in case of emergencies and during the night, as mentioned, we have access to a real toilet facility nearby. I flush on an average of two times per use! And if not used often enough to change cartridge at least once a week, it does start to smell. It is now a lot more expensive than I anticipated and wanted to spend! It is way too expensive to be having these issues!!

PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU WOULD CONSIDER PURCHASING: I used this "toilet" for a three month trip around the country and it was an epic fail. First impression is that is poorly made, like someone made it in their basement with off the shelf parts. Before leaving I checked to make sure it was working correctly and to my surprise, it didn't work. It was flushing constantly, without pushing the flush button. Laveo knew about this problem and did replace the toilet, but they did not replace the refill cartridge. Plus, the company rep, although helpful, seemed very emotionally deflated with her job, which is not professional or helpful. The second one arrived and at first inspection seemed it was working correctly, but that would turn out to be a false statement. I could never get the film to seal the first time, so I always had to flush twice. That means the 15-17 flushes per cartridge is again, a false statement, I was able to get 5 uses per cartridge. That works out to be about $5 per use, what a deal! Because there was no way to have it replaced on the road, I had to make due. After flushing twice per use and thinking it was sealed from odor, that would be, again-again, a false statement, I will just say, smelly-smelly. I now realized that I can no longer trust this toilet from working as advertised, so I discontinued use. So now I have a $600 tent hold down and space consumer. I'm now back from my trip and I contacted Laveo, in hope that they would stand behind their product, again I was disappointed. I was hoping for a prorated refund or at least another replacement, but after a week of phone calls and half dozen emails and a ridiculous amount of excuses, I had to settled on this toilet being "repaired". There reason was, they only warranty this toilet for 90 days, even though, at the time of this dispute, nowhere on their website, owners manual, box/packaging, or toilet this there any warranty info, so I guess they can just make it up as they go along, not very professional. After speaking with the company I purchased this toilet from, they told me directly that Laveo knows about these problems, but Laveo will never admit this, they will just keep making excuses. I've been in the US manufacturing business for over 25 years and I have never seen a display of inferiority and unprofessionalism as I have seen with Laveo, as a US manufacture, I'm embarrassed for them.

There is an issue with the liquid not being "flushed " , thoroughly but I found if you put enough toilet paper to absorb the urine , it will flush with out any problem. The charge for 1-2 hrs holds up good. We unplugged ours after charging for 1 hour , it' held it's charge for 3 days. I think it would be more than 3 days but we left our cabin after 3 days. The item came fully assembled, with an extra cartridge. All you have to do is charge it and you're ready to "go"! The instructions manual is very clear...I have not seen a manual clearly written in a long time! If you have a remote cabin like we do, this is the best thing to have. Beats going to the privy in the middle of the nite, in below 20 degree weather!

It works well with one exception. If you try to flush liquid only, or a small or lightweight flush,..occasionally the process will lift the mylar bowl bottom too high. This results in non-positive control of the contents. Not to the point of spillage, but I did not like the suspense at all ! The company told me to just add more water to provide the weight to prevent the raising up of the mylar and contents. I did and it works, its not perfect, but its acceptable. Every flush is different depending on the previous volume and configuration of the mylar. The bottom is smooth and flat for the first use of the refill only. For liquids only, bentonite or kitty litter does help. These remedies are slightly counter productive in reference to cost of refills, but we are paying for convenience and this unit returns civilization to the activity. After returning home, there were contents that have been in the unit for 8 months with the very slightest of odor, if any. The red line indicating your near the end of the refill needs to be more consistent and pronounced . There are 15 flushes per refill or more. The battery charge lasts a long time. I recommend multiple liquid uses before flushing for best results. If this product wouldn't have worked well , I would have sold my camping truck.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great alternative when you can't have a regular toilet We put this toilet in the guest room we built above our garage. There was no hope of being able to run a line to our septic system without breaking the bank. After reading the mixed reviews on this, we took a chance and it has worked extremely well. We just put in our 3rd cartridge and it has been a learning experience. Other people have mentioned that urine will leak up when you "flush"... this is true. I read a couple reviews who said to just put a lot of toilet paper in and it will absorb the urine. That sorta worked, but we still found that urine would still leak up - just not as much. So, while changing my cat litter box, I had an idea... how about absorbing cat litter? I didn't want to use clay or crystals for fear that they might rip the foil bags. So we bought the wood pellet cat litter and it worked great! So we now keep a container with the litter in it next to the toilet with a scoop and it's no problem to just put a scoop of liter on the urine before "flushing". I have found it's best to only enough pellets in to absorb the urine, no more, because it will take up room in the toilet. We have also found that this is the solution to being able to use it to urinate more than once per "flush".

Do not buy this. The cartridges are very expensive and it doesn't seal in the waste very good. It smells bad. I have it in a boat so the temp can range pretty good, so when it gets hot I think it builds up gasses.... Maybe in a cold house it works well. Now I need to get rid of it. If anyone wants to buy it for "cheap" email me - sehl DOT dan AT Gmail.com. I didnt even use the 2 cartridges that came with it completely. Its spotless. I hate to throw it in the trash. -Dan

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Addition to my Sailboat I own a 30 sailboat. The previous owner had replaced the holding tank toilet with a Porti-Pottie toilet. I hated that because the tank was so heavy and cumbersome and difficult to remove from the boat and dump. So I have replaced that with the dry flush toilet and I am totally pleased. The physical installation using the accessory mounting kit was easy, and connecting to my boat 12 volt system was also simple. The disposable "flushing" cartridges are easy to use and extra cartridges are super light and easy to store. The system works great, no leaks, no oders, no holding tanks to haul and dump or pump out. I will never go back to a wet flush system and the first modification I make to any future boat will be to install a dry flush toilet
