Customer Reviews

20 in. Kohler Variable Speed Self-Propelled Gas Mower (CARB)-DISCONTINUED is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lawn mower with a couple key features that set it apart I honestly wish sometimes I could just walk in somewhere and buy something without researching it to death. Unfortunately, I never can do that, and when the time came for a new mower, no exception, I began obsessing over reviews, prices, specifications, etc. In the end I decided on a more expensive, more fancy features Husqvarna. Well, that sucker started one time, and never again. I ended up ripping off the pull handle trying to restart it, so back it went ( did not buy it from HD). This Lawn Boy has only a 20" deck, which at first was one of the reasons why I didn't buy it (I'm replacing an electric mower with a 20" deck, wanted to step up) but after using the Husq, I realized that 20" is better for my application. I have some tight spots to squeeze through, and a significant slope in my backyard and the 22" monster was a bit of an overkill. I initially went to HD after returning the Husq to get the $259 Lawn Boy, but, alas, they only had one at my local store and the box had been opened already. So, in a moment of weakness I stepped up to the $299 version, which has one key feature that I can't understand why every mower doesn't include: the ability to shut the blades off without stopping the engine. This feature is fantastic, and the features I gave up with this Lawn Boy pale in comparison to the blade stop feature. I also find it's easier to start with this feature, because when you pull the cord, the starter/engine isn't turning the blades. It just goes to idle and hums nicely until you squeeze the handle and the blades are engaged. Then, if you find anything in your way, just release the handle, the blades stop, the engine goes back to idle and you can do whatever you need to do. Squeeze the handle when you're ready, the blades fire up and off you go. It has a kill switch on the left side of the handle to actually shut the engine off. LOVE this feature, I can't stress that enough. As far as the other features go, this mower is a bit of a no-frills model but what I love about it is includes the most important big features, and none of the others that I probably wouldn't use anyway. The Kohler motor runs great and really does fire first pull. Even the first time it ever ran, the first pull was plenty. Also, the RWD self propel system is KEY. Climbing hills is a breeze, I have a nice slope in the back and the mower climbed it with absolutely no hesitation. I can't comment on the bagging (never do it) but so far the mulching works great. The adjusters are manual, no single lever adjuster, but that's a set-it-and-forget-it feature for me. It also doesn't have the hose cleaner attachment, but I'm not convinced that really works anyway. I was considering a Toro Personal Pace, but I see now that the model with the blade stop feature is $100 more. No thanks. I've never seen a mower for $300 or less with RWD self propel and the blade stop feature. I can't see how anyone wouldn't be happy with this mower. I absolutely love it and would recommend it to anyone!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lawnboy It gets the job done and then some! Easy to put together and was ready to go in 5 minutes. Tough and rugged but easy enough for me to handle without having to call the husband to help me out.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wont start! This is my second one, the first one wouldn't start after it ran for the first time. I took it back to Home Depot. Thinking it was a fluke, I bought another one, this one lasted around 8 months, now it won't start again! Has spark, has good fuel...something wrong in all the automatic choke/carb settings. Now i'm outside the 30 day return window at home depot, have to take it to a customer care service center, and lawnboy conviently excludes fuel related problems from their warranty. DON'T BUY THIS MOWER!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Starts on first try every time I was truly amazed that the lawn mower starts on first try each and every time I start it. It sips gasoline. I use less than one quart to do 3/4 of acre of lawn. It mulches quite well with only occasional need of cleaning. Good lawn mower but do not buy on the internet for the free delivery. It was $50 cheaper in the store.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Likes:..Starts right up..first pull..... Dislikes:..adjustment for self-propell, not user friendly...not as light weight as my old Lawnboy

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My next mower will b the same! This little guy has been a great mower. Bought it last year, on second season now and no problems. I have never had to pull twice to start it. 20 in deck seemed a bit small, but the great performance has proved to be one of the best mowers on the market.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The mower so far has started well, but leaves wind rows. The "infinitely variable" drive system will need some adjustment. The unit was shipped with broken rear level adjustment lever covers and a punctured oil container, which leaked all over the inside of the box and onto the mower. LawnBoy should consider a more substantial shipping carton. Rather than returning the unit in an oil-soaked box, I contacted Home Depot and LawnBoy, who gave me, respectively, an e-coupon for my trouble and replacement covers, which I installed. I sent in the card in the owner's manual for the side discharge accessory, which I received within 10 days. Despite the shipping problems, I was happy with the responsiveness of Home Depot and LawnBoy.
