Self propelled on hills

A portion of my yard is steep. Will the self propelled go up a slope? I mow across the slope, starting at the top. Are the transmissions made by Toro or AYP? The belt driven systems in the older Toros and Lawnboys was quite good.
Asked by: Will
Since this mower has plastic wheels, it goes up hills ok. After the wheels wear down a bit with a lot of use , the traction drops. Granted I use my mower for 8 lawns a week . That adds up to 8 years of use in one year for my mower. My back tires have practically no traction on hills anymore. Not bad though. I would say the tires last about ten years for normal usage.will make a full review about my mower either Fall or Winter.

Will the mower operate properly without the bag attachment.

I don't want to have to empty a bag, I prefer to just let the clippings fall to the ground. Is that possible with this model of mower?
Asked by: woodybuckeye
Yes, this mower is excellent for mulching and the bag is not required.

After owning two Lawn Boys (1974 model and 1992 M series) with great satisfaction, alas my 1992 mower gave up. It was a no brainer to purchase another Lawn Boy, so I bought this model last August (2016) and used it for the remainder of the season. In a nutshell, I love it. A couple of points that take away the fifth star: I'm older now and the fixed speed is a bit too fast for me with no apparent way to slow it down; and, when I registered the mower as soon as I purchased it, I requested the side discharge chute but have not received it after 5 months. I can attest to the design of my earlier models being more robust, but given my age (68), I am confident in my "life time" warranty!!

My favorite things are the light weight and easy to fill wide mouth fuel tank. It also starts easy and the walking speed is perfect for me. The things I don't like. There's a rear adjustment bar that ties the rear wheels together. This drags through deep thick grass making it hard to pull back and turn. I would rather have to adjust each wheel then fight this bar. The other thing I don't like, this mower doesn't go high enough for me and it easily could. If they put another set of notches on the adjuster the mower would go up 4 inches.

It is supposed to be a two pull start machine, that is why I did not get electric start. However, it takes 5-7 pulls to start and if it is warm, it may not start at all. I'd say the Kohler engine starting system is poor at best. I have been a Lawn Boy machine user for over 60 years. this is probably the last one I will ever buy!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Major design flaw I had a rear wheel drive lawn boy before and I loved it, it was light and easy to handle and the rear wheel drive was awesome. So when it died I thought I could just by a new lawn boy. Problem is that Lawn boy thought it would be convenient to put a single leaver adjustment for the each pair of wheels. Front adjustment is fine but the rear wheels are connected by a bar that extends below the deck of the lawnmower. This bar might as well as be a plow because it sticks into the grass and inhibits the mower from moving forward.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Three and out Purchased approximately 27-8 months ago, so just out of warranty. As others mention, rear adjustment pegs falling off, had to hard-bolt the lever. Two days ago, lever sheared in the middle, so mower dropped right to the ground. Had to finish lawn holding rear end up myself. (This did not go well of course) Self propel has been weak from day one and requires that you provide at least 50% of the forward thrust yourself. I take good care of equipment like this, so it's well-maintained. Just not the LawnBoy quality I remember. Part on order for rear height adjustment, I pay for it of course since out of warranty. Gonna limp this mower through the rest of the season and it's outta here. Disposable basically.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't Buy This Mower! This mower guarantees 1 pull starting and simply does not deliver. I had owned mine about 3 months when it first failed to start on one pull after two weeks between uses. I took it to the repair shop I was directed to but was told this would be the only repair under warranty because I had not started the mower in greater than 7 days. Almost immediately after the repair it again began to require multiple pulls, typically two or three minutes worth! It also sputters and almost dies when rolling over slightly bumpy portions of my lawn. I initially liked this mower but am now well past completely frustrated with it. Don't buy one!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from no star product Lawnboy does not honor their "full 2 year warranty" on their warranties except if there is a problem in the first month. They will tell you that the problem was caused by the user, not the company, so you are out of luck if the lawn mower breaks down after its initial use. Lawnboy use to make a reliable, well made lawn mower that lasted for years, but not anymore. One repair shop said that their lawn mower is nothing more than a "throwaway, disposable item" . Another shop said that they do not honor their warranties and does not want to get involved unless you just purchased it. Beware of a recommended repair shop that they refer you to and will take the lawn mower in.
