I am wiring a long extension from my generator to 220 house plug. Four wire male plug on both ends. If

the red wire is attached to the Y side of the plug and the black is attached to the X side, must that be the same on the other end plug or can they be reversed? Plugs are both Pass & Seymour (L1430-P)
Asked by: Anonymous
do not wire it with male on both ends. use a Power Inlet Box. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Reliance-Controls-30-Amp-Power-Inlet-Box-PB30/202213702 also you could be risking peoples lives if you plan to back feed your house this way. In some states it is against the law to have a back-feed that is not on a main breaker lockout: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Eaton-Generator-Interlock-Kit-for-BR-Load-Centers-with-CSR-BWH-Main-BRMIKCSR/205050834 If you were to back-feed with the main on it could make it all the way back to the transformer that supplies your home and once it does the transformer works both ways. If you feed it 240 on your end close to 7000 volts could come out the high end. You put people at risk. At the very least put a main lockout on the breaker that is for the feed in. The way the lock out works is the feed in breaker cannot be on with the main on.

where the plug is four wire and I only have three wire cord. its ok to use a jumper on plug from ground to neutral correct?

Asked by: Anonymous
I dont think I would for a 220V make up. Having the Grounds tied together is the most important. The Neutral and Ground are already tied together at the Main Breaker Box or Panel and you dont want to cause a "Ground Loop" which you possible could by making that jumper.

I needed this to replace the female plug at one end of my generator extension cord. This is designed with separate plastic channels for each of the 4 wires to slip into the metal electrical contacts for easy clamping of the wires by screwing the clamps against the wires. However, due to the thickness of the 30 Amp wires, they would bump against a ledge in the channels, preventing the wires from slipping into the clamps. I used a philips head screwdriver to scrape away the ledges, thereby clearing the channels. One of the channels was defective in that a thin layer of plastic blocked the end of the channel just before the clamp. The screwdriver easily drilled through, clearing the channel. Upon completion, the plug worked as designed allowing my generator to power my circuits.

Doing one at a time caused it to pull out when inserting another. Stranded wires were a tight fit. The trick was cutting all 4 to the exact same length with the correct slack to bend into place.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product Good product manufactured well. I was extremely pleased with how well the screw clamps grabbed the wire. I used this with 8 gauge wire and it held very well. The enclosure screws are very course thread so there is no wasted time screwing the parts together and clamping the wire to the back. I have used this exact plug previously and will again I recommend this product
