Customer Questions & Answers

This item states it is a 4 way switch. I though a 4 way would control lights form 3 locations, but the write says only 2 locations. So why buy this?

Asked by: Tucker
IT does give you the ability to work the lights from 3 locations, in the package it shows you the way to do it. But it requires 2 2-way switches and 1 4-way switch.

Semi Working after Installing.

Our dining room has three light switches (all of which are over 36 yrs old). The 4-way switch was starting to go with the lights going off at times without touching that switch, but flicking the switch off then back on would return the lighting. You'd also have to fiddle with the switch as sometimes it would turn the lights on then off as you flipped the switch. Clearly the switch was faulty so I picked up this new 4-way switch and hooked it up. Now what happens is all three switches will work IF the new 4-way is in the on position. If the 4 way is in the off position neither of the other two switches work. In case this is important: The wiring in the wall was 2 black wires and 2 red. The two red wires go to the bottom left/right connectors and the black go to the top left/right connectors on the 4-way switch. Any help or advice is appreciated. Thanks John

Does this work with LED lights?

Kitchen has 3 switches to control main lights. When "off" the lights glow at a low level. I've tried all switch combinations and they still glow when "off"
Asked by: Jeremy
The switch should work with all lighting types. You may want to call Tech Support at 800-824-3005 to discuss your application in greater detail with a tech.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The other reviewers lack experience, this is a quality product that installs easily. First and foremost, if you are a hobbyist DIYer and haven't done a whole lot of wiring, then you should probably hire out electrical jobs, especially those that are more than a basic outlet replacement. Some of the folks that are complaining about screws falling out within this unit very clearly lack understanding of how terminals work on some higher end components. In this case, it is actually preferable to use the slots as they are secured by the terminal and not a spring-loaded mechanism as is the case with some components. This makes wiring a breeze. If you don't use the slots, then make sure you allow the screw head to "drop" out of the side (with gravity) and wrap your wirings around the terminal. Unscrewing it will lead to exactly the situation that some are describing and this is NOT actually a defect. Secondly, a 4 way switch sits in between two 3 ways switches. It's important to grasp this concept. If you are replacing an existing 4 way, the wiring may not swap out exactly as the old switch was wired. Older 4 way switches had designations on their terminals like "Line 1" and "Line 2". Whereas you'll notice on this switch that two of the terminals are 'input' and two are 'output'. If the switch functions in unanticipated fashion after install, chances are you got your wiring wrong and the switch hasn't actually failed. After installation, it's important to test the functionality of the load with each of the switches in each position. It's possible that one position may make the switch appear to be "dead" or "always on" if wired incorrectly. That said, this switch works beautifully if you understand how to install it. Installation is a 5 minute affair with the screw-lock terminals. The switch itself feels like a quality unit and has a good action to it. Not much else to say other than that.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 4-way wall switch Just the needed switch while wiring up some new overhead led lights out in the garage. A little bit more pricy than the 3-way but now I can turn them on or off at each entrance.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Switch Bad Bought this switch for a three switch Living room light setup. After a month and a half got to finishing the wiring to the light. Turned on the Breaker, switched the first 3 way, light went on. Flipped the other three way, light went out, flipped the 4 way, light did not go on. Flipped both 3's no light. Returned the 4 way, and everything started working. Pulled out the four way, found it ohm'd good in straight path, bad in crossed path. As I don't know where the receipt is, it can't be exchanged. Tis a shame for a 10 dollar 'preferred' switch...
