Answer:
It should be a drop in replacement for standard duplex receptacle installations. If the installation is in a special shallow box there could be an issue, but that should not be the norm...

If a knockout is used in the box for a conduit or strain relief, the recessed portion may not clear the mounting ring and the wires that will exit through the knock out. A back knockout may be possible in a 2.5in deep box, and a bottom knockout that is situated at the rear of a 2.5in deep box may work, but only allows wires from a conduit, not romex. A top knockout will not work. Be sure to dry fit all Read More

It would leave very little room for the wiring. I would use a deep box.

Answer:
Ed, This does not protect against surges and low voltage situations that can cause early failure of electronics. Best to put some line protection at the circuit breaker if their is no way to use a local surge protector.

This device is just an outlet. It can be used to replace normal standard outlets in existing construction or it can be designed in for use in new construction or new installations. This is not a battery backup device or a surge protector. The only difference between this device and a normal/standard duplex outlet is that the standard outlet mounts flush to the wall and this outlet when mounted is recessed a small distance into the wall. The idea is to minimize the distance required for electrical plugs and cords to stick out from a wall when plugged into the electrical outlet. Those plugs and cords can force pieces of furniture to have to sit further away from the wall than we would like.
When hanging large screen tv's on walls there is not a lot of room behind many of them once mounted to allow the power plug and power cable to be plugged in if one uses standard flush mounted power outlets. By using a recessed outlet one gains the room needed to allow for power plugs and cables behind those closely mounted tv's. I know... I just hung a closely wall mounted 55" LED tv in our living room and used one of these devices to gain the room and space that I needed for the tv's power cable.
Yes, it is a good idea to provide surge/power protection for all your high value electronic equipment. I make sure that my tv and av equipment are all protected. That, though, requires an additional device or more to accomplish and is another topic. Read Less

Answer:
There is no surge protection built into this outlet. You should add a surge protector.
Home Depot does sell a recessed outlet with surge protector just for TV's, but I have no experience with that model:

I'm pretty sure they don't carry this in any other color besides white but you could buy this option, paint the housing and install an almond outlet.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This is it for a flat screen TV!!! Again, I've used many, but finally found this unit for the power to my flat screen wall mount tvs. It's proven to be as reliable as you are used to getting from the Home Depot and Leviton!! Thank you!! September 6, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by It works The outlet works fine but it occupies almost all the space in a standard electrical box. I would recommend using this in a deep box instead. Very tight fit. August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works, and reasonable price Definitely need a deep box for this receptacle. Obviously the recessed box takes a lot of space. August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great behind furniture If you are dealing with small space this helps keeps the tv stand closer to wall and also helps keep the night stand closer to the wall as well. July 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Darn Good Easy to install, Easy to install, Easy to install, Easy to install July 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great for mounting TV This outlet is perfect when you need the plug to be flat. We mounted the TV over the fireplace and needed more clearance for the plug. June 21, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Quality Mostly used for wall mounted tv's. If you have more cables , then you need a long gang box. It was easy to install with drywall gang box. May 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Need more room behind things? There are times when outlets get in the way because of things plugged in that stick out further than we need. This is especially true if things like bookshelves, stereo/av cabinets, etc. would be better served if they could stand closer to the wall and at the same time need to cover an outlet. Recessed duplex power outlets to the rescue! Replace those surface mounted duplex power outlets with recessed ones where needed. Doing so will gain you back a little space and make your furniture appear nicer because it looks like it fits and belongs where it is standing along the wall. March 29, 2016
