I have an old house with two wires. When I hook up the combination switch/outlet as the Leviton rep suggests, The outlet is then controlled by the switch, but I have no lights. If I wire the thing with hot to the brass screw and neutral to a black screw, I get lights operated by the switch but no power to the outlet regardless of switch position. If I wire hot to the silver screw and neutral to a black screw, I have constant power to the outlet, but no lights. When I leave the neutral wire on the black screw and jump the hot side, (hot to both brass and silver screw, I get power to the outlet with the switch in the off position, but when I throw the switch, the lights come on but it kills the power to the outlet. Is there any way to wire this so I can have power to the outlet when the lights are on?

Without more information as to what you're using the switch for, I can't offer specific details, but if you there are only two wires in the box, you'd need to identify them with a tester first. If you want the switch to operate a separate load while the receptacle is always live, you'd need additional wires.

yes. look on the inside of the box. the instructions / wiring is printed on the underside of the cardboard that makes up the box. so you have to tear open the box the switch comes in. No paper instructions are included.

how do I wire this device so that the switch controls the adjoining outlet only, but not other receptacles on the circuit?

Asked by: stevo
You may or may not have enough air gap in your box per your local code but it can be done by, Making sure the circuit is not energized! wire nutting the incoming common to a black stub and to an outgoing common. That would keep the rest of the outlets always live. The new black jumper would then go to the black common screw next to the switch. The snap off separator needs to be removed to split the outlet and switch commons. Then the switch leg "brass screw gets a jumper around the back to black common next to the receptacle. The white neutrals, in and out to the rest of the chain get wire nutted along with a white stub that goes to the silver screw next to the receptacles larger opening. Wire nut the bare grounds along with a stub for the outlet and maybe even the box depending on your locals. Wrap electrical tape around the device making sure to lace under the mounting screws at least 3 times being sure to cover all of the terminals. Screw it in the box replace the cover and re-energize the circuit.

The Combination Switch and Outlet provided an outlet to an existing switch in my closet, allowing me to connect my Iron to it. (I have been using extension cable prior to the Switch and Outlet product). I prefer a vertical direction for the switch oppose to the current horizontal design, since all other switches in my house are vertical direction. Also, I suggest manufacturer to create a Do-It-Yourself video with a link address printed on the box to aid common users for the installation. I used a very helpful video on Youtube. The product is excellent, solid, very easy to install, and very functional. Thanks!

I am using this to control my shop light and grow light that does not have a switch, so that I don't have to keep plugging/unplugging it to turn it on and off. I'd have given 5 stars if the box included any instructions for this configuration, but it only tells you how to wire the switch to a light. If you want the switch to control the outlet on this receptacle, Neutral goes to "N", Hot goes to "A1", and the break-off tab should not be broken. My switch has some minor lumpy imperfections in the plastic, but it's not a concern for use in my basement.

It has easy diagrams printed inside the cardboard package for novices to install the switch, so don't just tear the box apart if you think you might need help. It does not however have a diagram for wiring the switch to the outlet it self. Unlike the outlet I replaced with this, the commons are all by them selves on one side, the previous had the brass switched leg screw on that side as well. Making it easier to wire the switch directly to its outlet. In order to power this outlet with its own switch a jumper must be ran diagonally across the back from the brass switch leg to the black common on the outlet and the brass snap off to split the receptacle MUST be removed other wise the outlet stays constantly hot.

It works fine. I didn't really need the child-resistant feature, but it was the only switch/outlet option at the store, so I bought it. Out of curiosity, I tried sticking a screwdriver into the slots, and the child-proofing seemed to work well. Overall, the product is working as expected.

It was shallow enough to fit in my surface mount box as well. There is a tab on the side that can be removed to allow the switch to be independently controlled from the outlet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised Though the instructions could be better for those of us with older homes and the that goes with them, the switch/outlet work. The tablet resistance is really stiff at last to start. wiring
