Answer:
They have little flaps that prevent you from sticking a butter knife in one side and shocking yourself. Both sides of the receptacle must be pushed in evenly (i.e. plugging something in) to release the lock.

Answer:
Good day,
The shutters inside a Tamper Resistant outlet will not open and allow access to the contacts unless the plug's prongs are evenly inserted into the outlet. This ensures that foreign objects cannot be inserted into the outlet.

Hello Pete,
First off, never work on a live circuit! Always turn off the breaker controlling the circuit. Next, unless the original outlet in question was controlled by a switch the receptacle should have constant power. Now back to your outlets, lets assume you had a switched outlet that would operate a lamp when you walk in the room. This was a common setup in very old houses. If this is the case, them turn off power at the breaker and check the operation of the switch with a continuity meter. This will let you know if the switch is breaking the power supply when you you turn off the switch. If your switch controls a light in the ceiling, I would have to assume that your receptacles should have constant power. One last thought, make sure the black wire (hot) is attached to the bronze colored screw, the white (neutral) is connected to the silver screw and the bare wire (ground) is connected to the green screw. Always think safety first and if there is any doubt, hire a qualified electrician.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Much better These tamper-resistant outlets are so much better than the ones installed in our house three or four years ago when they were first required by code. Even to this day, many of ours are nearly impossible to use, as the safety shields don't slip out of the way easily, while these work very smoothly from the first try June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Purchase Very easy to install. Just one reminder; after you install tamper resistant outlets your voltage finder will not work unless it is a higher priced "proximity" meter. July 7, 2016
