Answer:
Assuming the wires are in the right places, My guess is that you didn't break off the tabbed section of the jumping buss bar between the 2 copper colored screws. The wall switch acts to replace or remove this jumper remotely.. Google "switched outlet wiring".
This guy's epxlanation is almost right but what he does is exactly right.

Hello Pete,
First off, never work on a live circuit! Always turn off the breaker controlling the circuit. Next, unless the original outlet in question was controlled by a switch the receptacle should have constant power. Now back to your outlets, lets assume you had a switched outlet that would operate a lamp when you walk in the room. This was a common setup in very old houses. If this is the case, them turn off power at the breaker and check the operation of the switch with a continuity meter. This will let you know if the switch is breaking the power supply when you you turn off the switch. If your switch controls a light in the ceiling, I would have to assume that your receptacles should have constant power. One last thought, make sure the black wire (hot) is attached to the bronze colored screw, the white (neutral) is connected to the silver screw and the bare wire (ground) is connected to the green screw. Always think safety first and if there is any doubt, hire a qualified electrician.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tough design. Smooth operation. This pack of TR receptacles is different from what was available in the past: no TR label and much easier plug insertion. They still have tamper resistant shutters to keep foreign objects out of the dangerous parts. I like how thick and tough the face of these receptacles is. Another brand, sold at the blue and gray box store, has a very thin face that probably won't hold up well over time.

The cost is only slightly more than non Tamper Resistant outlets. I would not use anything else, especially since it means that I get to throw out all of the outlet protectors that I had to keep in my old outlets to protect my 2yr old.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Impressed At least one of the items in the box were actually already wired. I'm not an electrician, but he was upset to see this. The box was obviously tampered with and he will not use at least the one he found to be already used.
