Product Overview

  • Helps protect your home from dangerous arc-faults
  • TEST and RESET button on outlet face for localized testing
  • Easy to install; fits in a standard wall box
The SmartlockPro Outlet Branch Circuit (OBC) AFCI Receptacle offers advanced technology to help protect against electrical fires resulting from arc-faults. Designed to detect a wide range of potentially hazardous arc-faults resulting from damage in branch circuit wiring as well as extensions to branches such as appliances and cord sets, the OBC AFCI responds by interrupting power. This helps reduce the likelihood of the home’s electrical system being an ignition source of a fire. Often unseen, arc-faults can occur anywhere in the home’s electrical system including within walls, at loose electrical connections or within electrical cords accidently damaged by impinging furniture. AFCI’s are now required by the National Electrical Code in many areas of the home.
  • Use of test and reset buttons is similar to traditional GFCI receptacles of which consumers have become familiar with translates into greater acceptance of the technology and a more user-friendly platform
  • Automatically tests the AFCI every time the reset button is depressed; the AFCI will not reset if the AFCI circuit is not functioning properly
  • By blocking reset of the AFCI if protection has been compromised, the SmartlockPro OBC AFCI reduces the possibility of end-users incorrectly assuming that a reset AFCI is providing protection when its functionality has been compromised
  • A line-load reversal diagnostic feature is provided which prevents the AFCI from being reset and stops power from being fed to the AFCI receptacle face or through to downstream devices; a green LED indicator on the AFCI’s face also illuminates to alert the installer to a line-load wiring reversal when the device is in the tripped state
  • TR symbol indicates the device’s compliance with the latest NEC requirements for tamper-resistant receptacles in residences and childcare facilities

No Aluminum Wiring

Do you make an ACFI receptacle that DOES accept Aluminum wiring?
Asked by: HFMark
You would have to put a splice in your aluminum wiring to use this. An electrical supplier would be able to give you a more definitive answer.

20 Amp AFCI Tamper Resistant Duplex Outlet, White is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to install I received the AFCI outlet today, I first installed it in the master bedroom where I usually plug the vacuum cleaner in. well that was a mistake as soon as I turned on the vacuum cleaner it kicked the built in circuit breaker in the AFCI unit. After some research I found out you can't plug a vacuum in it or anything that has a motor in it. I moved it to another area of the bedroom seems to work okay now. It should be installed on the first branch of the circuit then it will protect everything on that circuit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works exceptionally well We have installed this in the feeder end of a new circuit. These are recommended and required by current electrical code for bedrooms, living areas and ares not subject to wetness, where a GFI might be more appropriate. The premise of an AFCI is that a small spark, from something like a defective wall plug, switch, wiring or wall outlet, will immediately trip to prevent an electrical fire, some which start in confined spaces as the interior walls or attics. These operate with millivolts and in milliseconds to safeguard your home and loved ones. We are picking up an arc fault now, possibly because of a switch wired into the circuit, so may have to go a different route. It just goes to show that it works as advertised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AFCI is new for the 2014 NEC Code I'd never heard of AFCI until I received this outlet. This outlet is supposed to suppress arc faults, which generally is only a problem for homes with frayed wiring (conductors exposed/broken). Electrical fires are more common in homes with poor electrical wiring, so these outlets can really be useful and prevent electrical fires in homes if they are correctly installed in the first branch circuit. However, these outlets will not provide 100% protection since the wiring from the electrical panel to the first outlet is not AFCI protected. This outlet is a quick fix, but not a long-term solution to the problem, which is to replace your electric panel and install a new panel with appropriately rated devices.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good to know its Connected & Monitoring the Circuit Have an older modular home that I wanted to run an outside line to a new box for general electrical needs on the back side of the house. After talking to our Home Depot Associates for a little while decided to go ahead & run a new line to an out side box through the 1st receptacle on the circuit. The wall being 2x4 thick was easy enough. I did have to extend the inside face of the box due to the 20-Amp AFCI Tamper Resistant Duplex Outlet being a little deeper than a normal plug receptacle. Did so by purchasing a flush mount box & installing. Worked well. the extra inch allowed a quick & easy install. Upon turning on the power the LED lit up to verify all was good.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Up to Code A bit pricey, but required by code. Needed to use tandem breakers in the panel so didn't have room for AFCI in there. Put these on the first outlet for each circuit, worked great. These are tripped out of the box. You have to put a load on the circuit in order for them to reset.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for old houses (and new) Great for houses where you may not be able to easily replace old wiring. I've got some circuits that I haven't been able to completely rewire. Putting this on the first outlet of a circuit will give some protection from arcing. Arcing is very different than the risk GFCI is trying to prevent. Arcing can occur due to failures in the insulation of wire... if you've taken out old wire, you've certainly seen spots where insulation has at least deteriorated. Circuits may not be able to detect some arcing. One AFCI outlet at the first stop in the circuit can detect arcing, and hopefully prevent a fire. It's expensive, but worth the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Outlet Makes Home Safer There's a nice video on Youtube from Leviton showing step by step how to install an outlet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrlGJOk6aPU BUT, for this one, you must install this outlet as the FIRST OUTLET IN THE BRANCH CIRCUIT. It is very good quality, durable & weighty. I definitely feel safer knowing that it can prevent a fire. It comes with very clear & precise directions. I had an electrician install mine because I didn't know which outlet or switch was first in the branch circuit. Nice product. I definitely recommend it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's an outlet It's an outlet. It works just fine. I'm not really sure what else to say about it. Remember to turn off the power at the circuit panel. I used them to replace the old ugly beige outlets that used to be in my place. What were people thinking installing them back then?! Classic white outlets and covers for me. It only took me about 10 minutes to install it and that included the trip down to the basement for the electrical panel. Thank you Youtube for instructions!
