When replacing a 3-Way Switch what would cause the second swtich to stop working ?

Is it possible that we switched the two wires on the right ? There are two wires on the right and another wire on the left plus the ground wire on the left. Do you have a Video on this type of switch ? I watched the Video on the single switch.
Asked by: Marilyn
It is easy to wire these wrong. There are many ways to wire them, as to where the power goes, etc., but there are some constants. First of all, the white ground wire does not go to either of the two 3-way switches when you are trying to make 2 switches operate 1 light. The second thing to remember is that a pair of wires has to go between the 2 switches. You can use a black and white wire pair for this instead a 3 wire with red, but then stripe the white with a magic marker, so others will know it is not white ground. Generally, then power goes into one switch, has to go through one of the pair between the switches, and then out the other switch to the light. A video won't help much because you won't see enough of the circult. Draw yourself a wire diagram. Follow the flow as switches are thrown, and it will make sense.

I need to control a circuit from three locations. Do I use a 3way switch in two of the locations and a 4way switch for the third location?
Asked by: Jude
In that case you need two 3-way switches, and a single 4-way switch between them in the circuit.

Before I replaced the 3-way switches, it was working fine. When I replaced it, it only works like a 1-way switch. I know there are supposed to be 1 ground, 2 travelers, and 1 Hot/Common but when I checked it with the wire meter test, I noticed there are two Hot/Common wires. How do I fix this problem? On the other side, I have exactly 1 ground, 2 travelers, and 1 Hot/Common.
Asked by: Tommy
It sounds as if you have wired mis-wired the device. It's common to mistake a traveler wire for a common wire, and have them attached to the incorrect terminals. I suggest you use a tester to confirm which wire is the hot (120V), and which are travelers. The remaining wire would be the switch leg/common. A ground wire is not necessary for the device to function, but that would be the bare copper wire, or green wire in the box. The hot/common should attach to the black screws, whereas the travelers are to be installed on the brass screw terminals (it doesn't matter which), and the ground goes to the green screw. For wiring assistance, please call 1-800-824-3005.

I replaced 4 older single pull switchs with these Z-Wave switchs and paired them to a Wink Hub 2 and a Wink Relay. They were easy to pair with the hub and relay. They are working fabulously. I did have one that did not work at all but Home Depot replaced it. My only problem is that my Home Depot store does not stock enough of them.
