Answer:
In a 3 way switch you will have 1 common wire and 2 traveler wires. The common(hot) will go on the dark colored screw and the travelers will go on the brass or silver colored screws. Both switches should be wired with the wires on each end on the same screws.

Hello tom, I’m Chris from the Home Depot’s how-to Community. Thank you for your question.

Hello tom, I’m Chris from the Home Depot’s how-to Community. Thank you for your question.
This is actually much easier to see in a diagram, (supplied with each switch), than explained in words, but I will try.
Three way switches are used in pairs where each switch can independently control the same light, or set of lights. In order to do this, one switch has a power lead coming in attached to the black screw, and 2 “traveler” leads each attached to a brass colored screw going to the other switch.
That other switch accepts the travelers from the first using the brass screws, and sends power out to the load from the black screw.
There are no neutral wires attached to the switches as only the load requires them. There should also be ground wires attached to each switch at their green screws.
I hope this helps,
Chris.

Answer:
This switch has 1 common screw and 2 traveler screws. For 3 way applications, they are not considered poles.

Answer:
Good day,
The 5603 is a 3-way. Technically, a 3-way switch is a single pole, double throw switch.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 3.6 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Design flaw in the wire release mechanism It took me some time to figure out what is wrong with the switch. The wire pushed into its respective hole will not hold. I bought two new switches and experimented with the connection and removal of the wires. I found out that once the release tab is pushed (and the wire removed), the contact mechanism is permanently deformed (damaged) so that pushing the "new" wire will not hold. Basically it is a cheap one-time design for the spring-loaded wire holder. In other words, once the wire is releases, you cannot use the spring loaded holes anymore. Try the side terminals. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor Quality Two of the three switches I bought were defective, and did not work following installation. Not a good batting average. July 31, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great! the switches work great. The installation was pretty easy. Matches with all my others which is very nicely. January 27, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love these switches. Clean look and sturdy. Try to get the pack to save money. They are great switches December 17, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A great and inexpensive update! We purchased these switches to update our 1960's recent home purchase that had all original switches. The old switches were dirty and mismatched from repairs over the years. After spending some time looking at the diagram to figure out how to install a 3-way switch, the installation was easy. They immediately updated the house and look great. This is an easy way to update your home and make it look like you've really spent some time on the details. August 29, 2010
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good standard grade switch I've been replacing all the outlets and switches in my house with Leviton's decorator line with good results for standard grade devices. However, the hookup diagram on the inside of the package is drawn in a pictorial rather than schematic fashion and is incomprehensable. Please use a standard schematic diagram which is at least understandable to us electrical gurus. December 6, 2011
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by I would prefer the insert and tighten type rather than wrap around These swithes are OK but if I have the choice even as signifigantly greater cost, (because it makes the job so much easier) I will buy similar swithces that allow me to insert the line then tighten down the conductor rather than the type that wrap around the screw. I will not use the option that allows you to insert the conductor without the ability to tighten the connection December 6, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Inexpensive way to update a home! This rocker switch has added an updated look to our home. We have slowly changed all of our old switches over to these and are quite happy with the result. Good quality product at an affordable price! May 22, 2012
