Customer Questions & Answers

what is a double pole outlet

My understanding is that pole applies to switches. What do you mean by pole in terms of an outlet?
Asked by: faxon
The "double pole" feature on this outlet refers to the fact that you can run separate circuits on each receptacle. Each side of the outlet has two screws. They are connected by a common conductor. There is a small bridge that can be snipped out that allows each receptacle to be wired to a unique circuit if desired. That would allow something like an "always hot" lower receptacle and a switched upper receptacle. Most upper end outlets have this feature. What's really nice about this "Preferred" grade outlet is that it also has brass plates on the terminal screws that capture the wire and provide more surface area to keep the connection secure. You aren't just relying on the screw heads and the loop you put wire.

Please explain the difference between self grounding and non self grounding.

Asked by: djjsw
Self-grounding devices have a small tab on the strap that, when mounted to a grounded box, will create a secure ground connection. This eliminates the need to connect an additional ground wire, saving time for a number of installs.

How does this device "protect against loss of ground fault protection" ?

How does this device "protect against loss of ground fault protection" ?
Asked by: Sam
This device does not offer any ground-fault protection, as it is a standard receptacle. This appears to be an error with the Home Depot listing, and should be corrected.

same question

Because LevitonProductExpert made no attempt to answer it. My understanding is that double pole outlets isolate both hot and neutral legs of the circuit, with grounding segregated, conducted directly to the building's ground. In some situations that's safer and stronger than connecting neutral to ground. In some situations it's necessary (split-wired receptacles, for instance). In most cases there's no functional advantage, and single pole outlets are considerably cheaper, but they are also often less robust mechanically. To my knowledge, a single pole outlet's only advantage is low cost. The question is: what's true?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product! I had to replace several failed outlets in my home. These appear to be more substantial than standard outlets. Also like the serrated wire clamps. Easy to install.
