Questions & Answers

what does the 1/4 in. measure mean?

Asked by: homehandygirl
1/4" means that the door overlaps the opening by 1/4" on all sides (the door's measurement is 1/2" bigger than the opening. If the door is 1" bigger than the opening, the hinge offsets the door 1/2" (to center the door in the opening).

How do these differ from the same brand, 1/2 in Satin Nickel Semi Wrap Overlay Hinge?

I updated the kitchen cabinets with a wood finish and also updated the hinges. I didn't want to replace the old hinges but they were warped. Home Depot did not have the same hinges that were original to the cabinets ( home built in 2003), nor were they sold online. Basically out of stock/ discontinued. I purchased this exact brand, but in the 1/2 in size (they are the closet match I could find at my local store) and they are giving me nothing but trouble. I'm wondering if these would work better.
Asked by: memyself
Measure the door and the opening. If the door is 1/2" larger than the opening, use the 1/4" hinges (door overlaps the opening 1/4" on all sides). If the door is 1" larger than the opening, use 1/2" overlay.

I had initially bought the Euro hinges, but didn't want to make big circular holes in my cabinet doors. This is replacement hardware for my kitchen. I was able to line up the holes on the door, but had to drill 2 holes on the face frame to replace the single centered hole in my old hinges. I think they look better than my old brass hinges with my newly white cabinets. They go well with satin nickel knobs and pulls.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good looking hinge This hinge works great once you get it dialed in. By that, I mean getting them adjusted just right. Don't forget to allow some extra depth for the hinge lest your doors stand proud of the opening, about an eighth of an inch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More than does the job- includes bumpers too Didn't think there would be a lot of difference between these hinge types, but it just goes to show that there's more to hinges than meets the eye. First, this hinge was hard as heck to find in the store- it was all the over in the blinds section, so if you don't see it in hardware don't give up, ask for help ( I don't like asking for help for directions, so yea, I paid a 20 minute premium for that). Second, this hinge is made of thick metal (see images) and is bent inward to ensure complete closure of the door when the spring action kicks in. Thirdly, the package includes (4) 5/8" screws AND (4) 1/2" screws to ensure you have the right size screw so you won't pierce the outside surface of the door. Lastly, they even included rubber bumpers to put on the door to prevent that "clang" sound when your door(s) snap close- it becomes a light "thump" sound instead. I originally picked the euro hidden hinges but I'm glad I changed my mind!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product, very robust. This was an easy to use product, comes with the necessary screws, and is fully adjustable for vertical and horizontal. Do not use the original mounting locations on the door or the cabinet frame. Use the original holes as guides and offset the hinge slightly. When you use the original holes it doesn't line up flush to the door or frame. Also, take a loose hinge and predrill the cabinet and door holes to make the screws go in without cracking the wood. An impact drill helps prevent stripping but don't tighten all the way with it or the screw head will break right off.
