I saw one other brand that stated explicitly they only work with non-visible hinges.

Answer:
The purpose of these dampers is to keep self-closing doors from slamming shut so hard. For example, I have installed three of of them in low, mid, hi positions on a 9 ft door in our back hall to our garage. It's a large, heavy door and when opened fully can create some noise when allowed to freely close on its own. But having the 3 dampers in place helps a lot. Answer:
Yes, the dampers don't need them and they may keep the door from opening.

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 100 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Plastic body warps when you tighten the screw I didn't realize that they sell both plastic and metal slow closures. These are plastic. I figured it wouldn't matter. Until I tried to tighten a screw down. Either the thing is loose and doesn't work, or you tighten it down and it warps the body making it turn sideways. The trick is to hold the drill as horizontal as possible (maybe 22 degree) and hold the body of the closure as flush and tight as you can against the wood cabinet while you screw it in. Make sure to use a drill with a torque setting on low or you will rip right through the plastic. I am contemplating taking them all out and returning them for metal ones. Complete junk. July 30, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by work well Pretty good, tough to keep them square in the corner, the screw needs to be at the perfect angle or it shifts the whole unit. if the thing had a square footprint ( base against cabinet), this would not happen. August 14, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Purchase Ever When my son bought his house these were the first thing he put in it. I had to have them too. They are great at keeping from your cupboards from slamming. I highly recommend them. August 9, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Can't review Returned product. Wrong type and size for the kitchen cupboards August 2, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works well Note that the body is plastic and not metal even though it looks like metal in the pictures and it can be scratched very easily while drilling. The good: worked well. I only put 1 in the top of my cabinets and it seems to get the job done. Installation is fairly easy, all you need is a small drill bit and a Phillips screw driver. Pilot drill about 1/4" for the screws and the drill bit size is given in the installation instructions. I would suggest using a hand screw driver to screw in the screw as I was afraid I would break this plastic piece if I used the electric driver. The Bad: Some what difficult to drill the hole as its at a slight angle. Most people would be attaching this to an already assembled cabinet and with the doors all attached I found my self in awkward angles to drill the holes. If you are installing them before you put your cabinets on the wall it would be much easier. The adjustment screw maybe hard to get to once installed (in my case I had my cabinets already full of stuff), so make sure you adjust it before you put them in. Once I figured out my setting I set the adjustment screw before I installed it, this seems to save some time. Always test fit it in a scrap piece of wood before drilling holes in your cabinets. I usually do this and not always trust what the instruction manual says. July 15, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by How did we ever live without these? In a household with different sleep/work schedules, the slam of a cabinet door is a big deal. Furst, we put in a new Thomasville kitchen from the Home Depot. Once we experienced the soft close, we chose to retrofit two of our bathrooms with this damper. A peaceful home is the result! No accidental door slams, no interrupted sleep even with complex schedules. July 13, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Product Just installed a week ago and so far they are great. I would have given 5 stars but had a couple of concerns. When I looked at the product on-line I thought they were metal, but in fact they are plastic. That may not be an issue as they are not too likely to break where they are installed at the top hinge side of the cabinet doors. One other issue is that the adjustments had to be turned nearly to the limit to allow the doors to close quickly and quietly. Just another turn or so on the adjustment screws would have let the screw fall out. Our cabinets have hinges that are spring loaded to make the doors close but if yours do not I don't know how these can work. Self closing hinges are essential for these soft close adapters. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Made of plastic Note: they are plastic. The corners broke on some of them but I was still able to use them. May 31, 2016
