Questions & Answers

What would be the best tool to cut these?

Asked by: Hairwiz14
I found the utility knife method somewhat difficult. It worked but took too much time and effort. I ended up using an electric oscillating saw for scoring (Rockwell F50 with a semi-circular drywall blade). Similar to working with drywall, I used a square and pencil to mark the required cutlines on the top surface of the material and followed with the oscillating saw instead of a utility knife for deep scoring. Then I finished the cut by "breaking" along the score lines and back-cutting the rubber backing with a sharp utility knife. An oscillating saw doesn't throw debris and dust like a jigsaw or circular saw so it was easier to use in the bathroom where the flooring was installed. A small broom and dustpan made cleanup between cuts simple.

This is hands down the worst vinyl plank flooring I have ever used. It scratches very easily, dogs will ruin this floor. Stay away from this product. Buy ANYTHING else.

Sterling Oak 8.7 in. x 47.6 in. Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring (20.06 sq. ft. / case) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 246.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice bathroom flooring This Life-Proof flooring is a great addition to the bathroom. Not wanting tile, we needed something else that would be waterproof. This flooring claims to do that job. It has a nice wood appearance, but has the durability of vinyl. Installation is easy, as it already has the pad attached to the back. I have installed it over concrete and it just clicks together. I would recommend for any projects where your flooring needs to be waterproof and hold up to high traffic.

It looks great with our newly resurfaced cabinets. My wife loves it. I like that it is thicker which I think it is more stable. Installation was fairly easy although I had a hard time cutting pieces with a utility knife. It just wouldn't score the tile enough. Instead, I used my power tools. A power miter saw for crosscuts and a jig saw for lengthwise cuts and any cutouts around protrusions and cabinets. I would advise this to be standard procedure for installation. It remains to be seen how it holds up but aesthetically I am very satisfied.

The only reason for not giving it 5 stars is that the locking mechanism is a bit difficult but more on that later. We were replacing a floor that had carpet and linoleum in a three season cottage up north. That means that it would see a huge range of temperatures over the course of the year so a floating floor with solid joints was a must. Also this was going in the kitchen and bath so waterproof joints were key. After surveying all ends of the market we liked the quality of the finish, the warranty, and having the underlay already attached made this a great value. Unpacking the flooring we found that each piece was in perfect condition without any defect or variation in color or quality. Note that there are about four different patterns of planking so you may need to work out of a couple different boxes to get a good mix. After removing the old flooring we were left with an uneven surface where the adhesive-backed linoleum was so having a thick, rigid core plank really helped. The planking covered every imperfection in the sub-floor except for one small area that was severely gouged. We used a little Tyvek tape to fill underneath and all was well. The locking mechanism is not very forgiving and is a bit difficult to master. It may take you a bit to figure out just the right angle and how to pound the plank and joint into place but once you do the resulting seam is perfect. We did this alongside a contractor friend who has installed a wide variety of flooring products. Initially he said this was the most difficult he had ever used to get the joints seated correctly but after several hours once he got the hang of it he changed his mind. We used a knife to score and cut most planks but used a sabre saw for for odd cutouts and a circular saw for ripping. The end results are better than we had imagined and the floor is beautiful as you can see from the pictures below. The flooring feels great underfoot, has a nice matte surface that isn't too slippery, and the joints are all smooth. In the entire floor there are only two tiny corners that didn't lock absolutely flat and perfect but they are so minor as to not be noticeable if you didn't know they were there. It's not the cheapest or least expensive (by far) but the quality is superb and I would not hesitate to recommend this product.

It made our basement look totally different and we love the grayish look. We chose this brand because we didn't have to remove the ceramic tile we already had in the basement it just lays right on top of it. Also it's waterproof with a lifetime warranty. We were going to pay people to lay the floor down and the price range was from $700-1700. Both contractors wanted to glue the floor down even though the instructions stated you just lay and lock. So we decided to save that money and do it ourselves. We watched the Home Depot instructional video to see how to put it down. It was helpful but the only thing is they used a knife to cut the flooring, we found that the knife wasn't strong or as easy as the video so we used a jigsaw. Overall it was easy and simple to put down, it's just the edges and corners was a little bit more time consuming. The way the floor is made, once you cut it vertically, you couldn't use the remainder of the piece you cut because you lose the edges that snaps together, so we did end up wasting a lot of pieces. Overall I am happy with the floor and glad we installed it ourselves. It took 3.5 hours to put most of the floor down, another 3.5 hours to cut and put the edges and corner pieces of the floor down and we didn't use any glue. Thinking about getting some for the bathroom...

I was trying to figure out what kind of flooring to use for my kitchen, entry way and half bath. I finally decided on this luxury vinyl plank flooring and I couldn't be happier. It was easy to install and it looks beautiful. It looks like wood flooring but is very durable and waterproof, which is important in both the kitchen and bathroom. I plan on putting the same flooring in my other bathrooms and laundry room!!

I'm glad I watched the installation video as this floor needs to be installed differently than most laminates because of the snap and lock end seams. I found that with this and most lock together laminates, a tapping block is a MUST. I installed 200 sq. ft. in our kitchen. I choose this floor because it is 7mm thick and is waterproof. This floor has transformed our kitchen into a show place.

Bittersweet, I've put down a few floors however, as I had to accept the final look because of several factors i.e. ooby waby walls and floors, that made it much more difficult to get each plank flat and smooth however did get them to lock. The seals are very soft between a rubber/putty kind of material and if you have to break them apart it's tricky to do and keep the seals in tack to retry a better fitting plank. and I did find 50 percent of the time swapping a plank did the trick. The planks on the long end will slide back and forth so make sure your first row is straight, "very" straight and well gapless backed and the rest of the planks go easy on a flat floor however, if the first row is "NOT" perfectly straight and against a perfectly straight backed/gapless wall, as you lay the field it will start to keystone on ya and "WILL" drive you insane when you can't get some of them smooth when locked or the ends have gaps you can't close. Very arduous and time consuming to just use a razor/utility knife to snap, it's a more rigid plank so I found using a table saw/chop saw/jig saw made all the cuts effortless, of course this is DIY home owner opinion, in the professional world the boys would not bring along saws, they have Popeye wrists so using a utility knife no matter how thick is effortless. DO NOT use any chemicals at all it will leave a non removable residue, I used a very mild dish detergent on a couple planks however had a rinse rag also and all good. This flooring is NOT glossy so whew didn't have to go crazy keep it that way.
